Glad this is being looked at. I've stopped pending a patch.

I dropped settings to medium from Episode 2 to keep playing but Toggling between high (at max brightness) and medium (with normal) became too taxing by Episode 3's ending. neither looked right as the game continued.

Medium blends the surfaces and colour flatly making them harder to parse. High drops the visibility down into unplayable levels on most maps outside of Episode 1 but keeps the shading + optional effects. The other Retro effects and CRT don't seem to fix as a workaround either.

Correct, for the artic level I think the brightness level it's ok and it adds to the level atmosphere.
Now in the case of egypt I don't think I should be using light spell if I'm outside the piramid and I see the sun in the skybox...
Inside the piramid it's even harder to see. I like to switch between weapons and light source but I ended up using more the uzi as the muzzle flash lights up the place.. but once I ran out of ammo I was just standing in front of doorways waiting for the enemies to rush In so they get their dosis. I like to see what I shoot to conserve ammo but everything was so dark that I couldn't!
I'll wait for the patch before continuing :)
oh jeesus, thanks for the medium graphics tip. the game looks SOOO mcuh better now. im on episode 4 now and i was getting really annoyed at having to hold right click for the light the last 3 hours. i figured after such a long time that cant be as intended. i wish i knew of this beforehand. cant believe this didnt make it to release.

The medium graphics trick fixes the insane level of darkness and now I can actually use spells besides flashlight AND see the game. It also seems to have fixed an issue I had with sideways launching rockets.
Between some of the performance issues and the lighting, this game has the special distinction of actually giving me legitimate headaches. I don't know if it's a motion sickness or eye strain thing, but I hope some of that gets fixed in a later patch.
If you want to keep graphics on High, you can change Brightness up, or even better, change Threshold down. In fact, I much prefer the look of the game with Threshold all the way down to 0.

dustingunn: This game is even darker than Doom 3 sometimes, and with the same problem of not having a flashlight and gun at the same time. It's also not scary at all so it doesn't seem to serve any purpose and gets in the way of the gameplay.

Furthermore, the darkness sabotages any potential spellcaster builds. You can't really be expected to switch back and forth between offensive spells and the flashlight spell.

nokturnus: I just put the game at medium graphics, it's not dark anymore
Holy crap, thank you. That helps so much, I was also getting immensely frustrated having to basically have flashlight spell on all the time.
Yeah setting the game on medium helps so much, trying to play on high is a nightmare for episode 3 (especially Hanger) I feel like it must be some sort of lighting problem. Even setting threshold to 0 and brightness to highest you still can't really see all that much, there's not a lot of contrast the further out beyond 5 feet.

Do we manually download it or is it going to be automatic through Galaxy?

Galaxy should patch your games automatically.

Hey,

if galaxy does not update your game automatically, please go to game settings and select "manual updates". With this option you'll be able to select any version you like, even the newest one.

The game looks super washed out to me now... all the previous blacks look grey... glad to see the native 1440p res, though! Any idea on how to get the colors right? The brightness slider didn't do what I thought it would... just made all the "blacks" a darker grey... looks really bad

Yeah me too, at least that was my first impression from playing it shortly. I am currently in the E4 Missions and they were in the last patch very dark, now it looks too bright and to lit. Maybe something in between? I liked how the flaming shotgun made the enemys light up in the dark and with that light up the scene.

Also the red of the Lava in the Workshop now looks very red, before it had an Orange Glow to it.
Yep, the game looks all washed up now.

Thing is, I think there was a misunderstanding.

Most people were complaining that the maps were too dark because they installed 1.0.0.1.1 which for some reason removed the 'fog' in the maps, which made them too dark.

Here's a screenshot from one of the E3M2 on the release version of the game (0.9.9.8):

https://www.gog.com/upload/forum/2018/10/187d858b75e622d3443fb1615721b206eb3b64dd.jpg

The same map, this time from the 1.0.0.1.1 :

https://www.gog.com/upload/forum/2018/10/9403cb342cda42c59329390b8e6aa2a97a813233.jpg

As you can see the 'fog' is gone, which makes the map dark and also that you can see a fugly skybox.

Now, SOME maps, like E3M3 NEVER had any fog to begin with, even in the original release:

Which made them super dark (notice the bad skybox as well), and I think that inconsistency is what people were complaining for. That's also the reason why setting game on medium quality fixed the issue - there was no environmental fog on this setting at all, so the gamma wasn't affected by the lack of it.

I don't think anyone wanted game's gamma increase all over the board - that's something you can do in options, GPU settings, monitor settings, etc. The issue was just that some maps haven't got the 'fog' that lit the place up by scattering the light.
