Maybe I'm just misunderstanding how the game works, but I died in casual mode and it only lets me restart, exit to workshop, and exit to main menu. How do I get extra lives? Is completing a level the only way to keep points?

My understanding is that restart consumes 1 life and takes you back to the beginning of the current stage, so you don't have to redo the whole set of stages. You can find extra lives as you play. I'm just under halfway through on Standard difficulty and I have about 20 extra lives at this point.
