Silenced_Ed_M190: Thanks! I renamed the Movies folder to "Movies_disabled" and my computer is able to run the game without a hitch.

Croyzers: I got it working in Windows 8.1 without renaming the Movies folder.

After getting stuck after the Eidos into vids, there was an extra button on the task bar - Project Eden movie player. I just clicked on that, it took me to a black screen.

I hit the "Esc" key at that point and hey presto - it took me to the menu screen and have been able to play normally.

Hope this helps other people
Awesome! Your workaround appeared working perfectly on my computer after renaming the Movies folder back to normal. I really hope that this solution will come to the light, so GOG tech support would figure it out a way to implement your fix into the game without pressing escape key and switching back and forth between two windows - ActiveMovie Window and EDEN FMV WINDOW.

Glad it worked for you. It is extremely frustrating to have to do this (it was pure guesswork on my part), but it does seem you only need to do it once. I've not had any issues since then. So I'm thinking it might be a default configuration problem - project eden may default to something that is incompatible with Windows 8

I've not posted much on GOG but I've seen some sticky threads. Maybe that be the best course of action, if other people are able to confirm it works.

This way also helped too

shame its not working for other people tho.
The above workaround I managed to find on my own apparently, except I had not used ESC but SPACE to "skip" the video that was playing in the EDEN FMV WINDOW. Game runs great without any compatibility requirements.
same problem
Windows 10 has the same issue as Windows 8, but the same fixes work.

Rename the intro movies, or just click the game icon in the taskbar then press Esc or Space to skip each one.

I also find in Windows 10 the game is always forced into a window. If this happens you need to change the resolution in-game to something else, then back to what you actually want and it'll be full-screen.
