TRIGGER WARNING: Review Makes Use of CAPSLOCK
I'm heartbroken. I wrote a comment last night about the Prodeus multiplayer and my internet cut out and the comment somehow got deleted.
ANYWAYS. This game is fucking awesome. It's pixelated and old-school and yet it feels extremely fresh and fun to play. Literally feels like opening up a window and getting a blast of cool air.
The game is no-frills. But everything it does, it does right.
MOVEMENT:
There are plenty of beautiful games out there that lack substance. And by substance I don't mean story because FIRST and foremost a game has to be PLAYABLE. Graphics, story etc are all secondary to being able to actual play the game. To be able to move around within the world a game creates, fluidly and effortlessly is the foundation on which everything else is based. If the controls suck in a game, good luck retaining an audience past 5 minutes.
The controls are fluid and comfortable. They don't at all feel janky or jerky. Jumping feels good. Just the right amount of air-time, sprint feels great and is easy to access by pressing the left stick. Basically without going into to much detail, the control scheme is intuitive and quite literally perfect. Not OVERCOMPLICATED. A lot of games love to add all kinds of extraneous actions and buttons to press. Buts sometimes I don't want to feel like I'm manning a spaceship, I just want to pick up the controller and have some mindless fun.
GRAPHICS:
Colors are beautiful. The darkness in the levels adds a great bit of contrast against the rich/bright colors. So what you get is a dark game (in feel and in palate) with high CLARITY. Enemies are clearly visible. So although the atmosphere is dark and brooding, you can still see what the hell is going on. Pixelated art is done tastefully and looks amazing. I WANT A PRODEUS T-SHIRT.
SOUND DESIGN:
Fantastic. Crispy treble, nice mids and a solid bass make guns feel "real". Not much bad I can think of.
GAME ITSELF:
Great feel/atmosphere. Dark but not too scary. A bit claustrophobic at times, but many levels open up to large expansive areas.
Verticality is done well too. Most levels having many floors to play within keeps things interesting and not stagnant. ALL guns are great and have a weight to them. Aiming is a pleasure and I appreciate that recoil for most stuff is minimal.
Blood and guts are a fun touch and actually quite pretty. It doesn't "feel" gory, even though it's extremely GORY. Does that make sense?
SCORE:
For what it is, this game is a 10/10
MULTIPLAYER:
So far lobbies are completely empty. Last night I had the fortune of finding ONE. SINGLE. PLAYER. LOL.
However, the game was fun and the mechanics of multiplayer are just as fluid as the campaign. WOW!
MY APPEAL TO FELLOW GOG FELLOWS: PLEASE PLAY MULTIPLAYER! This game is good enough to build a community around and I implore you to do it. I haven't had a multiplayer experience this good since Goldeneye N64. Reminiscent of the simple and intuitive matches of old Halo.
What I mean to say is: let's support indie developers that create games that DON'T SUCK. I can tell a lot of love was put into this game and it deserves to have a flourishing multiplayer base.
When a game has no political message or agenda of any kind and is simple GOOD. It is literally the obligation of the gaming "community" to support it.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
