frostcircus: I agree pops117, and I think you're the first who's shared my opinion.
pops117: There are many others that think the same way, especially on the official forums ;)
frostcircus: Once you got over all the lameness, Warrior Within was an excellent sequel. It's a shame about all the backtracking (it means the game doesn't replay as well as SoT), but other than that it had a good story and a good advancement of the gameplay. Sadly, the boss fights were the worst in the history of gaming. That is hard to deny.
It's the backtracking I really enjoyed about this game, it gave the game a slight feel of open world. The juxtaposition of past and present, to overcome an obstacle for instance, was mindblowing. "Hey I remember this place, only there's like a huge tree growing out of the floor now" -> the artistic deepness made it for me aswell. Were the boss fights so bad ? I don't know how it could have been done any differently, I mean the characters had their own weak and strong points and special abilities. Shahdee's "super kick", Kaileena's "I can teleport and break your combo!", Dahaka's "stib taem ynit otni uoy ecils ll'I"...
frostcircus: Two Thrones was crap, and very condescending - almost to the point of being insulting. The ways it pretended to be "like Sands of Time" were just so very calculated and cynical, even moreso than the style switcheroo used in Warrior Within.
Our fault, many whiners criticized PoPWW's dark and depressing theme, they wanted SoT back... I liked climbing the Tower and fighting the Twins :D though. And the mental realm bit, it played well on some unforgettable locations of the series. I liked it to some extent.
frostcircus: For all its faults, Warrior Within actually had something to say, and had its own presence in the series. Two Thrones was just your generic, mass-produced, soulless, boring sequel. It pisses me off that people fell for it.
I do agree Two Thrones could have been so much more. There were some good ideas and puzzles. The chariot races or the speed kill feature while being some nice addition were not that well implemented. It's known that the development was quite chaotic at that time. They went from one concept to another trying out different approaches. Also the Producer that worked on the first two got replaced. In the end the game was rushed to be available around christmas time. Business...
Still I stand on my position claiming the game was fun and entertaining nonetheless. :P
Just take it for what it is and what it has to offer.
I totally agree with pops here.
Let me add my own mustard to the topic (as they say in Germany (I am not german, I just lived there too long ;) )).
Sands of time was awesome, it had that romantic air of arabian nights, like in old stories of 1001 nights. It really took you into another dreamy world where you could be a hero for a day.
Then came Warior Within which totally changed the atmosphere. It got VERY, even EXTREMELY dark. Not romantic at all, but instead with a depressing theme. and very hard music in the background.
Many people started bitching that this wasn't the real prince of persia, that this was Emo crap or something and that the game was too dificult. Sadly the publisher listened to us (the customers), which is very rare, and we got what we wished for, a crappy generic mainstream 3rd part. It tried to recreate the atmosphere and simplicity of SoT, but it wasn't really possible after WW and also a story has to evolve, it can't repeat itselve over and over again or it is bound to fail. And that even cared over to Assasin's Creed, it had a good story, but it was soulless in the end and the gameplay was EXTREMELY repetitive. Nobody bitched about TT though, because everyone realised it was their own fault and what they wished for.
I am not really including myselve there, I liked the change in WW and totally understood what the Character was going through. He was haunted and it was really the only way to go after SoT. He sacrificed himselve for a greater good, but lost his father (even had to kill him) and the love of his live in the process. He was an innocent youngster in SoT, but the innocence was lost now.
I also totally loved the gameplay. With all those crazy combos and dozens of ways to kill the enemies (but then again I am a notorious Street Fighter II and Street Figher IV player, which is all about combos). I also loved the chases where you had to run from that monster, it added a lot to the atmosphere.
There where some gratuitous moments, like that bitch at the beginning with a ridiculous closeup of her ass, but overall it was a great game experience.
BTW, anyone played the "new" prince of persia? I may want to give it a try and buy it, but not if it is crap and I heard it is really only enyoyable if you play it co-op. But I don't really have any gaming friends for this. Any ideas?
