Once the world's supply of whimsy ran out, Machinarium quickly turned into Primordia. :D
Or maybe Machinarium is actually set in the same world, at the same time - maybe even in the same city! But it's seen through the eyes (uhm, sensors?) of a robot with not enough processing power or different programming that causes it to perceive the world as much less bleak. The "Scary robot!"- robot for example.

Honestly, if you lived in such a world like Primordia with the capability to perceive it as such... And have the option to reprogram yourself not to - wouldn't such a possibility become more and more tempting as time goes by? We humans choose to ignore many depressing facts of everyday life until we can't avoid them no longer and very often at that moment we break down. A human-minded machine would face this dilemma as a conscious choice.
I certainly agree. In fact, the psychological tricks for coping with a world like that was one of the key themes driving my thinking about Primordia. (Here's a short piece where I talked about it: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2012/12/05/the-big-idea-mark-yohalem/)
