Yesterday, I was really enjoying playing this game through the opening up until the train ride to the city.
The atmosphere, voices, and puzzles are all really attractive and engaging.
It felt like a natural point to save and take a break, and this is where I began running into problems.

Hitting ctrl+s opened up the save menu, I typed in a name for my save, and hit the save button. The menu then closed. Assuming the process had worked, I then exited the game. When I tried to load up the game today, there were no saves listed on the load screen. After starting a new game, I attempted several times to create a save game as soon as I had control of Horatio. Clicking save within the save dialog simply closes the dialog and does not create a save that can be opened from the load dialog or main menu load game option. Both the save and load screens are completely empty of save games.

I installed Primordia to the default location (C:/GOG Games/Primordia).
I am running a Japanese version of Windows 7, and have found a folder named Primordia within the save games folder (保存したゲーム) within my documents with 3 files inside it (agssave.001 [1639kb], agssave.999 [935kb], prog.pri [1kb]). I was kind of concerned that maybe the game was having trouble reading the Japanese characters, but it (or the installer?) was able to write there in the first place.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I could resolve this issue?

As you have to install the game as Administrator, you may have started it right from the installer menu. Maybe the first save files were created, because you were running the game with admin rights and maybe this is the cause why it's not working anymore. So give it a try and run the game as Administrator/with administrator rights and check if you can save and/or load.

I don't know why it would initially save and then stop, but I do remember another Japanese player who had an issue with saving/loading. The coder fielded the issue. Let me find the thread. . . . Though I have a sinking feeling that the answer was that the problem was not solvable.

Here's the thread. It appears there as no solution. The first file in the folder you're listing is the autosave; the second is a game-state file unrelated to saves, and I have no idea about the third.

As best I can tell, your options are to try to complete the game in one sitting or to find a way to create a roman-alphabet save folder structure. What a lousy pair of choices. If you want, I'm happy to see about getting you a refund (if you'd like), or I have a gift-copy of King of Dragon's Pass that I picked up in the last sale that I'd be happy to give you as a consolation, if you'd like.

DeMignon, thanks for the suggestion, but it turns out that wasn't the issue.

Mark,
After looking at the link you provided, it became clear I was having the same problem as the Japanese player who also had Japanese characters in his file structure along the way to the save game folder, specifically the user name. I was able to get around the issue by creating a new Windows user account with just roman-alphabet characters. Run under this account, the game has no problem reading the save files! So now I can play the game!

I really appreciate your quick response and help in figuring out the source and solution to the issue. Also, thanks for the offer of a refund or compensation, it really makes me feel valued as a player. But it won't be necessary. I'm happy I could support your game, it seems really fun so far.
Whew! Glad the problem got resolved.

It's remarkable to me that a game programmed by a Greek, illustrated by an Australian, and largely beta-tested / quality-controlled by a Russian would be so provincial as to balk at Japanese characters, but I guess that's what happens when we use an engine that is a port of a port of a port of DOS software!

Nice workaround, thanks for sharing!
