You should beable to add it to your steam list like any other non steam game. I don't see how it would mess anything up.

you can perfectly add a non steam game to your list.
Ive done it with spellforce as well.
Choose add a non steam game.
The overlay will work using the shift+tab shortcut.
so yes chatting is possible :)
