Honestly, I am tired of games having fixed resolutions, it's so counter-intuitive. Is there anyway the game can be modified to allow for higher resolutions?

Apparently, no.
The game seems to be locked at 1024 X 768.

It seemed to be locked at 1024x768, but after adding the /windowed tag to the shortcut's target, I was able to select 1280x1024. Maybe you can do this, save the settings, remove the /windowed tag so the game runs fullscreen again, and restart?
