Hello.

I have a problem with graphics that cursory search yielded only a potential roundabout way of solving (post about getting game to run in window, which might solve the issue along the way). The problem is, that, well, game looks like in attached screenshot, which means it's literally impossible to play.

Does anyone know a solution and what info about my system should I include?

have you checked to see if the game is currently running in compatibility mode?

One possible solution: uncheck run in compatibility mode, press apply and ok then go back and check to make sure the change has taken affect., if it has not then u will need to change the properties of the exe from read only to write.

let me know if this helped.

it would help to know what you have tried to do so far so please be detailed
Thanks for reply. Unfortunately, I tried running it both with and without compatibility mode. It didn't seem to have any effect. Well, not entirely. I tried multiple compatibility modes and some caused game to outright crash when trying to run.

I tried changing in-game resolution, running it in default windowed mode, and (re?)installing June 2010 DirectX 9c. Neither of above seemed to have any effect. I had no further ideas because, frankly, I'm pretty stumped and my attempts at googling for solutions found nothing useful.

M_i_ech:
if you bought the game here have you reached out to tech support?
it u did NOT buy it here

OR you have a old cd version etc, then this might be a different story to try to get to run correctly this is why, if I am to try to assist u need to give me as much detail as possible

Which includes: are you running a old pc or a new/ newish modern 1
do you have a decent graphics card or are you running something thats just so so.

Additionally, another place to look for answers is going to be Steam.
Are you On Twitter? if yes whats is your username there? I could reach out to u there if ur ok with that.

I am not on here that much and you might find someone who can help on twitter if you have not searched there for answers.

I've bought PR1 on GoG. I might still have CD from old times, but I didn't even look for it.

I'm trying to run it on Xeon e3-1280 CPU with 24 GB DDR3, RTX 2060 graphics card and Win 10 Pro OS. OS is on NVMe PCIe SSD, but game is on more traditional SATA HDD.

Steam doesn't sell PR1 and doesn't have subforum for PR1. Their catalogue starts at PR2. Never used twitter.

I didn't contact GoG support, I had a look through "support centre" but it didn't seem to have any articles related to scrambled graphics, only cutscene and resolution problems. Ironically, cutscenes in my case seem to work flawlessly.

Hi, if I recall I had issues with graphics aswel, mine was a simple case of
uncheck the writ only on the exe if its On
unchecking the compatibility mode.

Then I hit Restart for the pc and come up and has had no issues.

first port of call would tech support here

Then see if steam has any details on this, as there are many entries for both pr1 and pr2 there
Well. I just fixed it, and I have to say I feel really, REALLY silly.

You see, looking through files, I found out that some files were strangely old. Including saves, saves dated to 2008.

So, as it turned out, game folder on my system WAS an installation from back in 2004 or something, that I have copied over and over whenever I changed systems. Yeah, I do that kind of thing.

When I installed GoG version, it installed into same folder. Maybe it didn't overwrite files, maybe files somehow got mixed up. Don't know, point is, it didn't work. So what I did just now, I copied save folder away, uninstalled the game, deleted folder and installed game anew. It appears to be working now.

Excellent to hear

By the way I got a HEAP of info on the game

here r a few things to note if you are new to the franchise:

First main tip: DO NOT BUY ANY TREASURE MAPS till you get the hideout - (private city) map and know its location...

Search for the riddle locations on here theres a thread for that, completing these riddles Builds your captains skills

if you hear people talking about your own private city, they mean what will be ingame called pirate Hideout and is given by the governor in the early stages of the game....

IF you are diligent and want to do the reload thing, you will likely be able to get better locations

1. save often so you can go back to earlier save then be mindful of when u got the map from your governor
2. you can get a small variety in the production that your hidehout will have
3. once u have the map, the first piece is always there, now its time to go find the second 1

Heres the process :

check two other ports you have not visited in a while,

if you have sent ships there But have NOT gone into town, this ideal,

At this point save your game

see if in the tavern you have a map seller

IF there is a map seller
Do NOT buy the map but Save your game at this point

Now, buy and see if you get the piece where X marks the spot, once u get that, u should be able to find the location fairly easy....

I took photos of the various pieces on my phone

It is time consuming BUT the right location will make a Huge difference as you repair for free in ur city

you will likely need upwards for around 5M in game currency

if you been saving up your decent fleets, at this stage before you go to building on ur hideout, collecting a large number the people u will need and stick em on ship, I had a surplus of about 1200 for the new city to kick off and ofc u will need a stack of supplies before they hit that area...

if u get stuck I check in on here now and then feel free to reach out
