I bought the game a couple of days back, since the days of Frontier Elite, I have always had a soft spot for trading games, and have recently had an urge to play one.

I've been feeling at a loss though, the game seems quite complex and whilst the tutorial got me off to a start, there is so much that isnt explained, neither in the Tutorial or Game Manual, and I've found my self scratching my head in puzzlement with many parts of the game. For example the random city events, they are touched upon in the manual, but it doesnt actually bother to explain the effect of any of them, it doesnt tell me what effect that newly discovered Gold Mine is having for instance.

I figured I would find an online FAQ or Guide to help me out a little, but cant seem to find a single one for Port Royale 1 (There are plenty for PR2), so I'm guessing that the game wasnt very mainstream?

Has anyone happened to find a decent guide or FAQ online? I'd post questions here but I have so many that I cant remember them off the top of my head, they are usually just questions that pop up as and when I encounter them.

I never really found a FAQ for PR1. For the most part, I just got into the game and tried things, making use of boards like this when I got stuck. So feel free to post questions here if you want to know about something.

Yes, the tutorial isn't much help. It really only scratches the surface of what you can and need to do in the game.

Regarding the Gold Mine. That's PR's way of letting you know that a particular town is going to be quite wealthy for a short time. So visiting them for trade might be more profitable than usual - if memory serves me correctly.

Sorry for the late post to an old topic. but since noone had replied I thought a response was warranted since it was a valid question. I'm not playing PR at the moment, so haven't been checking the board as often as I used to.

(How have I not noticed this thread earlier?)

Anyway, Quirinius is right - your best bet at getting help for the game is asking your questions, as I also don't recall finding any FAQs/guides for the game.
As for the gold mine: it increases demand for the three luxury items, meaning you can count on it being sought after in the given city.
About a year ago I used the Internet Archive / Wayback Machine to get some info from the famenfortune.com site when it still existed.

What few scraps I could find about PR1.

I have made it into a ZIP file and renamed it to a .jpg file in order to try to attach to this post.

If it works, download file and rename file extension back to .zip.

I've also got some pictures of screenshots I found with the locations for some riddles.

Not sure if I should post them or not as since ever since the original "Pirates!" I have loved learning all the coastlines in these types of games. Makes it exciting when you go "AHA! Here it is!" when you finally find the right spot.
The closest thing to a guide I've found (besides here) is this page on Angelfire.

One stray bit of information I haven't seen anywhere: there's a sub-directory called "Logos" that has all the images you can put on your sails. All of these are 64 X 64 pixel bitmaps and you can add new ones; just take up the numbering sequence from the last one.
I've been in love with the Patrician/Port Royale series since ages past, and once had pretty much everything that was ever available online about the games... sadly, I can't find most of the stuff anymore. So here's a bunch of stuff I managed to keep over the years, enjoy. :)
The forum is giving me a hard time with the link... so just copy and paste this into your browser.

Thanks for the link! The forum requires a certain "Rep" level before you can post links (helps to squelch spam) so you'll be good to go once your rep comes up just a bit more. In the meantime, I linked it:
