Anybody has tried it and can report success/failure?

I downloaded today and haven't had any luck yet. Says some file is missing, but that won't stop me. "Could not find Translation File." Whatever that means.
Could be a DirectX issue.

I haven't tried the GoG version, but I own the original game and it runs fine for me in Wine.
danebramage: How did you start the game with wine?
I've managed to run the game in a virtual desktop using wine 1.1.29. The game also runs in fullscreen mode but on my widescreen monitor the main menu is cut in half because of the game's low resolution (maybe 800x600?).
The only visual glitch I noticed so far is that switching to Sea Chart mode the whole ocean appears in solid black (only the land is visible).
I have to admit: it's not a clean wine install, I used winetricks to install d3dx9 native libraries.

Works for me under Wine 1.2 on Ubuntu 10.04. No apparent problems so far.
Using Crossover Games and the C4P available here http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4044 Port Royale 1 works really good. The into movie is a bit cut though, but no big deal for me.
Wine 1.3.14:
no additional libriaries, no tweaking - works with no problems
Are you people really working all ok?
I just installed in wine 1.3.20 i think, And it runs excellently, only a problem with the black ocean though. And as its pristine waters and graphics are one of the major features why i love playing, it kinda ruins it for me.

The install went perfectly clean though, on a diferent prefix.
Assuming "it" means Port Royale rather than its sequel, it has been a failure so far. The game would seem to work except for the black ocean issue already mentioned and a strange bug on the city map, which makes buildings disappear when clicked on. Unfortunately the latter makes the game unplayable. I haven't found anything on the net regarding that bug, so it may be some obscure video driver issue (Radeon 9250), although it is strange that the buildings stay gone even after switching to the sea chart and back.

Update: the disappearing buildings bug seems to have been fixed in recent versions of Wine, currently using 1.5.6. The ocean remains black on the sea chart.
