Hi there,

I bought Populous 3 and can't get it to work.
Install was just fine but if I want to start it, nothing happens.
If I start the GoG setup a window appears, I press "launch", but nothing happens again.

I tried the option "launch as administrator", this seems to work because the game starts, but it crashes immediately.
I looked for a "atiumdag.dll" in the installation folder, because the support site for this game tells me too, but there is no such file which could cause this crash.

A direct launch via the popTB.exe starts the game with no crash, but then it's in software mode, which I don't prefer :(
So it seems to be a Direct3D problem.

Anyone else with this issue?

Did you try launching the D3DPopTB.exe ?

Yes I did.
It launches with admin rights and crashes like I described for the GoG setup.

Can you describe exactly what you mean by "crashes" ? It's a very ambiguous term that could refer to anything, please be specific. Screenshots or anything that indicates what you mean will help. :)

Even though the second image is written in a language I can't understand, the first image makes it clear you are trying to launch the game @ 1080p. This game does not support anything higher than the following resolutions:
* 1280x720 (16:9)
* 1280X800 (16:10)
* 1280x1024 (5:4)

I believe that the launcher just lists every display resolution your card supports, even if they don't work. Select 1280x720, 16bpp and the game should launch just fine. :)

Also, as I said before, launch the program using the executable named D3DPopTB.exe. Don't launch the game with the GOGLauncher file, as it has a lot of bugs that crash the program. Using the native applications developed by Bullfrog work more than the GOG additions. Also, if you have no "atiumdiag.dll" in the Populous install folder, then it means the installer didn't detect an ATI / AMD based graphics card

Tried your thought, but the crash still comes even at 640x480.
I can only choose 32bpp, but I don't think that could be the case.
I am having the same issue described by Ryul. I go to launch the game (gog launcher or exe file) then the game fails to launch.
This problem of not launching with an ATI card is wide spread. The file 'atiumdag.dll' is old (2009) and most likely does not support newer ATI cards which I'm guessing most of the Win 7 users have one.

The game works on my son's machine with an Nvidia card but it still sucks as well.

Only option here as I see it is to run it in software mode which really sucks for us ATI card users.

In regards to the atiumdag.dll file, try downloading the one provided in this post. For a lot of users, it has fixed their loading issues: http://www.gog.com/forum/populous_series/populous_the_beginning_cant_find_videocard/post18

Have you ever found a fix for this. I bought the game this year and it just doesn't start up... :/
Nick if you look up "populous reincarnated" you will get a website which has several patches for the game it also give you the option to play multiplayer as well :D

This is what I've had to do to get the game to work although I find there is a weird mouse delay I cannot get rid of :/
