i have ran down the compatibility suggestions, reinstalled direct X and ran in win 95 compatibility mode, with all permissions i could give the game. Even truned of the screen optimalisation.

only thing i've acomplished is that the game launcher ceased spitting out the error.

by not working i mean that the game starts loading and dose not manage to even get to splash screen, just messed up my opene windows and under minute it exits back to desktop.

are there anny patches i need?

Go to the game, then to the more dropdown menu, other > Populous The Beginning [Software]

That worked for me atleast

Late response as I don´t check this forum very much. Software mode works fine on any computer I´ve tried, on D3D mode is quite "complicated" but it yelds better graphics. If you want to check it i´ll leave a link.
If it´s too complicated I´ll grab my simplyfied notes.
