Supposedly you are supposed to call Colby in "Police Quest 2." But I have done so and every time, he still ends up dead. What do I accomplish?

Granted the one time I didn't call him, not only did he end up dead when I got to Steelton but so did Marie and the game was over. But I assumed, and the game said, that this was because I didn't call the Steelton Police.

I think calling Colby is necessary to get all the points, but, as far as I know, it doesn't change the plot of the game, at all. Probably, Colby is simply too arrogant to accept that his life is really in danger and his death is inevitable. (Not that many people in the game are crying for a man who was a professional drug dealer and only escaped prison by turning state's evidence, anyway.)
