I've have read that there is a bad ending if you shoot first, but I have shot WAY before Bains did and still gotten the good ending. Is it true that a bad ending exists in Police Quest 2?

I recall playing the game a lot, and I believe there is only one ending for Police Quest 2.

Correct. There is no bad ending. You either shoot him & win or get killed & lose. I suppose the latter could be considered a bad ending
