Edit: This is for SWAT 3 and I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Hi, it seems a lot of you are playing this game just fine so I thought I'd ask if any of you had to get by this error when starting the game "DirectX Error DDerr_Generic". I've done all the searches I can think of and tried all the solutions I found but none seem to work. What I'm looking for is someone who has really run into the problem and actually fixed it thremselves.

I know the problem is related to the movies because I can avoid this error initially on start up if I add a a parameter of -nointro to the shortcut but the next time I come to an in game movie it crashes.

I also had a similar problem in Thief which was solved by disabling all the movies. The game itself runs fine but if the movies try to run the game creashes.

SWAT 3 Reunited has a set of videos that were re-encoded in XVID format. It's because these videos were based on old DirectShow codecs that aren't in Windows 7 unless you have something along the lines of the K-Lite Codec Pack or the CCCP.

Thanks I tried it but it still is giving the same error.
I downloaded the K-Lite Codec Pack and the XVID movies but I still am getting that same error.
I tried it on a computer at my parents house that also has Windows 7 and the videos work right out of the install on their computer. Main difference is they have a Nividia GeForce 6800 and I am using a ATI Radeon 3000. Does anyone know of any settings in ATI that may get them to be able to play the videos in SWAT3?
I recall getting this before and I'd of sworn it was an encoding issue.

Try setting SWAT 3 to Windows XP or 98 compatibility mode.

Same error as you and still no solution. Made things worse by patching it, and now it wants me to insert a CD.

I installed SWAT3 two months ago and it ran fine back then. I tried running it today and now I'm getting the DirectX Error DDERR_GENERIC. I'm also using Win7 64bit. Setting it to WinXP compatibility fixes it, but I'd like to know why it worked a couple of months ago without needing the compatibility setting.
Old thread, but I just experienced the same thing: S3 worked a say 2 months ago, now it gives those same errors. I even did the same mistake as Quiet_Interloper (updating the game...). Now S3 asks for the CD.
UPDATE:
First, my system specs:
- Win.7 x64 with latest Win. updates
- AMD Radeon 7970M

I tried every suggested solution in the other thread suggested by Vegabond.

In my case there seems to have been some incompatibilities with video codecs being installed on my machine.
What worked for me in the end was:
- Installing DirectX June 2010 (just in case -- was probably unneccessary)
- Un-installing the K-Lite Codec, which was installed sometime in 2012
- Un-installing the XVid Codec, after trying that solution
- Not caring about the XVid encoded movies.

That's right; the game works here with the original movies as well as the XVid codec movies.
It works here even without compatibility mode.

The only issue I have which weren't there before, is glitchy 3D rendering (stretched polygons all over).

mod to HoMM2 with high res + no error on opening.
