I'd like to play this game with a controller, but I'm having no luck at all.
I've got two controllers - an older logitech wired (USB) gamepad and a shiny new wireless Xbox360 controller. Neither work in-game, although I've gotten the xbox controller to work navigating the game's menu buttons with the stick. I can even remap buttons with it in the "controls" section. But in-game, the controller does nothing. I've noticed I can navigate menus with the controller even when my player is configured to use the keyboard, so apparently the game has some controller-detection code going even when you're not set up to use one in-game. Nifty feature, but doesn't solve the problem of course.
Being a clever sort, I said "screw it" and set my config to keyboard only, then used joy2key to map the arrow keys to buttons on my gamepads. To my dawning horror, joy2key seems to absolutely not work at all in this game. It's as though something in the game's executable is actively thwarting the program. The only other time I've encountered similar behavior in a game designed for win95 and up is the first Turok...hmm wonder if using a Glide wrapper somehow screws up joy2key?
So, anyone got any suggestions? Game works fine with a keyboard but I'll be damned if I'm going to play a simple arcade racer like this one on anything other than one of my pads.
I'm using that "podhooks" dealie + nglide if it matters.
EDIT: Game was trollin' me. After a few retries it suddenly began to work with my wireless controller, though it only lets me use the first four buttons (even though it claims to recognize six). I'm guessing joy2key doesn't work because the game always looks for a controller even when it's set to "keyboard" so I retract my questions.
But now I have a new one - can a person play multiplayer over local LAN (not the wider internet) via TCP/IP using the "internet" option? The manual seems to indicate I could supply my local IP address to the other computer and it might work. But would like to confirm this is possible before I install on the wife's computer.
