I'm finding the combat in this game EXTREMELY difficult. I followed a guide I found and focused most of my stat points into WIS for exp bonuses but I've been playing for a while and have only gained 2 levels... Other than that I've focused mostly on STR since I was planning on just sticking with fighter class.

I'm at the buried village and I've become trapped. I can't leave the village 'cause the gang outside just thrash me and I can't progress into the catacombs cause I get annihilated by the swarms of enemies in there. To make matters worse I've run out of healing items.

Everything I read claims the combat shouldn't be difficult at all. What am I doing wrong?

Planescape: Torment is a game that rewards (with plenty of exp points) the smart player, a player that chooses to resolve problems with dialog not with combat.
This means you should pump up stats like inteligence/wisdom/charisma.

If you're stuck then you should avoid combat and just run until you enter a new map area ... don't forget that when just a party member leaves a map area then the whole party leaves that map area.

You should also be careful who you choose to piss off in the world of planescape.

Also of great importance are items and equipment.

You mention you gained two levels, that puts TNO at lvl 5, right ? Well, you probably missed lots of stuff in the hive because lvl 5 sounds a bit short if you're already in the burried village

Pay attention to items, charms and tatoos, all of them are of great importance to boost your party. Speaking of party, you have two companions with you right ? The one you start the game with and that other one that you can recruit in the Hive before going to the Burried Village.

Also pay attention to hit points gained when you level up your party. You should save before leveling up at these early levels (added hit points on lvl up are random untill lvl 10) and if you don't get decent added hit points reload and level up again untill you get decent hit points.
[EDIT] As pointed out by some folks below, this last one is not a concern if you have the Tweaks Pack installed.[EDIT]

Remember that you are allowed to die as often as you want. You can even use the "kill one enemy - die - go back - kill one enemy - die" tactic.
If Morte is in your party you can buy a good weapon fo him from the old woman you meet when you wake up after dying, you can also ask her to look for something inside you if you haven't done yet. If you have Dak'kon in your party use his powerful spells to buff your characters.

If he's he's using the fixpack this is no longer an issue.

What do you mean ?

TNO gains hp's as a fighter (on leveling up his highest level class) but the ammount is random (1-10) between levels 3-9.

Isn't that how it works ?

It is but if I have my facts right, the fixpack makes it so that you always gain the maximum amount of hp every level. That's of course if you chose to include this when installing the fixpack.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarification ;)

But that component is part of the Tweaks Pack, not the Fixpack, right ?
yes

Combat is no problem if you replay a walkthrough (in this case you can avoid almost everything) but if you roleplay yourself you'll most likely face difficult combat.
You're not the only one having trouble, I've seen several posts in several forums about this. You aren't doing anything wrong.

If you want a game with easy combat start with 18 in the main combat stat, constitution. With 9 con you start with 20 HP and regenerate 1 HP every 60 seconds, with 18 con you start 42 HP and regenerate 1 HP every 15 seconds, if you continue raising it you get even more HP and regenerate faster than most monsters are able to hurt you.

If your character has only 9 con you need 6 stat raises to gain a noteworthy benefit, in this case raising strength (but don't spend stat points to raise from 18 to 18/.., boosts from other sources jump directly from 18 to 19) or wis (I wouldn't raise it much higher than natural 19 since you can also raise it with equipment or quests) is will yield big benefits faster.

I have no idea honestly, I just know it's there somewhere :).
I found combat to be extremely easy, and none of my stats were combat focused. To make segments easier, make sure you've explored the hive and perhaps found an additional person to accompany you. Also, complete lots of quests-some of these are pretty interesting and don't require much combat. Level 5 seems kind of low for that area.
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I went through each area and talked to every named NPC I could find so I thought I had all the quests, but after reading through a guide I found a few I missed so went back for them. I've gained another level and I'm beginning to progress through the catacombs. Didn't think finding and doing every single quest for experience was vital for my survival so I guess I'll have to be more thorough from now on.
You lose nothing by dying. It's actually not a bad way to teleport back to the mortuary.

If things get really hairy, I think you can farm XP by resting in dangerous areas.

Well, according to that Qwinn dude, the guy with the fix pack and stuff, there are some consequences to dying often at the end of the game. Nothing that affects story, it's just that there will be more enemies in one of the areas at one point.
