I'm 1680x1050 (16:10) native and just wondering what resolution you guys would suggest for a first time player. (I believe I saw 1280x960 suggested in another topic but I'm not sure if it is me or some menus look stretchy)
1280 x 800 =16:10
640 x 480 = original
800 x 600 = almost original, but the edges of the screen aren't cut off
I prefer 800x600 because you still get to see all of the detail, but it doesn't feel quite so claustrophobic. Also, at that resolution, you don't have to do any tricks to make the font readable, either. I'm not really a fan of any of the "scaled-up" fonts in the UI mod. However, on a widescreen monitor, you need to make sure you can manually set it to be pillarboxed or it will look weird.
WXGA 1280 x 800 is the lowest standard 16:10 resolution.
640 x 480 & 800 x 600 are both 4:3, so you will get the black lines down the sides or it will pull out of shape & squares will become rectangles, faces will become fatter.

If you want a low resolution, then 800 x 500 & 768 x 480 are 16:10
If you can divide the X axis by 16 & multiply that number by 10 & get the Y axis, then it is a 16:10 and everything will stay in proportion.

I have a 16:9 monitor & play at 1280 x 720, I played without a GUI mod & the writing was small, but certainly not unreadable. I have since installed the GUI mod & have the fonts 40% bigger. To me now they look a bit too big & before my next playthrough I will drop it to 20%.

This image is 1280 x 720 with +40% fonts.

Edit: That didn't work well, Imageshack shrunk the image to 800 x 450

I actually like playing at the default resolution. 1440x900 looks nice, but anything that's drawn isn't scaled. Some maps and spells don't use the entire view space correctly.
1366x768 with +40% font size, which is my native resolution on a laptop. Looks pretty good, but a little difficult to pick up items.
On a 46" screen.. 1280x720 with text at +40%

Fantastic.
