Hello all. This is my first play-through of this awesome game. I have a question about suggested party sizes... Before I started playing, I read a few primers on basic strategy and noticed that it might not necessarily be a good idea to have more than a 3-4 person party because of how xp is divvied up. What do all of you have to say about this notion. I currently have Morte, Dak'Kon, and Annah in my party (I'm a mage w/ high wisdom and intelligence). I'm thinking of adding Falls-From-Grace (since she's a priest). Of course, I have no idea what combat will be like once I leave the Clerk's Ward and advance the story. Do you guys suppose that adding at least a fifth member to your party in this game is a good idea, or is it better to rely on as few other PC's as possible? I'm thinking that because I have a high intelligence and wisdom, it might not be a bad idea to add another character. Please weigh in.

And, of course, I am more accustomed to the AD&D dynamic of needing to think about how to balance a party along the lines of class... Is a priest really necessary in this game? I notice that I have the option of stockpiling up on items that might serve that function in a pinch. What is the general consensus among the community [other than simply playing and finding out (I will likely do that myself, I was just wondering about how to approach creating a larger party in this game)]? Do you guys think that the difference is negligible when compared to the possible benefit of a larger party? P.S.: I tend toward neutral good, and my party, of course, is an amalgam of neutral, lawful, and chaotic (leaning neutral)...

Get as large a party as possible. XP is divided among the party, but you get a lot of it, especially if you have a high Wisdom score. As to balancing a party by classes, this isn't much of an issue; if you get a full party, you will be forced to forego only one or two characters, and any combination of you and the others makes for a fairly balanced party. That and having additional characters along for the ride is important from a narrative perspective.
I consider Morte, Dak'kon, Annah and Grace to be the most essential story wise as they have more backstory than the other companions. That's not to say the others are irrelevant or uninteresting, they just feel a bit more "optional" to me.

Indeed. One of them is only available almost as a secret character, and players are likely to be more disposed towards one of the other two depending on how they are playing their character. My NO always came out Lawful Good, but wasn't an asshole about it; the moment one character started their "mercy is weakness" spiel, I knew who I wasn't picking up for the party.
Just take the party members you like, don't bother about the game getting more or less difficult with or without company.

Whether you have a party of 4 or 5 won't make a big difference, the 5th one only gets 20 percent of the XP while your your XP doubles if you solo instead of playing a party of 2.

The easiest way for beating the game is playing solo (just raise con until you're invincible) but it's not necessarily the most fun way.

If you want a compromise you can just dismiss your party members temporarily and grind a little solo.
