I wanted to become a mage at level 6 or 7, I did all the quests that you have to do for Mebbeth in order for her to train you (errands, market etc.) in advance around level 4 or so and then told her that I didn't want to become a mage at the moment.

I was hoping that I'd be able to come back to her at any time and she'd teach me no problem. However when I came back, there are no dialogue options for mage training or class transfer. I tried resting, saving, training as a thief and everything else (and loading back) but it seems like there is no way.

Did I mess up? Does the option really disappear? I tried talking to Dak'kon but he can't teach me and I obviously can't wait until I get to lower wards and meet the other mage trainer. Is there any other way? Or is there a way to get to lower wards even before you meet Pharod? I don't really mind even if it is a console command or some kind of NPC dialogue reset. Help, anyone?

Thanks!

Yup, looks like that option disappears. And you don't get to bring it back, because the whole chain of events that leads to you becoming a mage starts when you tell her why you want to learn the Art (your answer has some consequences later), and can't be repeated. I don't know what happens if you reset that variable ("Mebbeth_Art_Answer"), but even if it brings that option back, it'll also restart the quest chain again, so you'll have to redo it or do some more editing.

Why did you want to wait so long before switching classes, though?

[UPDATE:]

Let's run some tests.

1. MEBBETH_ART_ANSWER: change value to 0.
2. MEBBETH_QUEST: change value to 10.

This seems to have reset the quest completely, even though I picked the "just about to finish" state, and not the starting one. So it's really the answer variable that locks it.

So instead I figured that the game also checks for the quest items in the inventory. I left MEBBETH_ART_ANSWER at its original value (determined by the answer) and did this:

1. MEBBETH_QUEST: change value to 10.
2. Inventory edit: TANKARDF.ITM put back into TNO's inventory.

This skipped the quests right to where you finish the last one, and Mebbeth switched him to Mage class.

I'm using NearInfinity for editing, but any savegame editor that can alter variables and inventory will do.

Hi, thank you very much for the detailed answer!

I played around with DLTCEP and NearInfinity and tried editing the save files.

MEBBETH_ART_ANSWER is indeed the culprit. Just a note if anyone manages to mess it up the same way like I did:

The variables you're looking for are in the .gam files, not in the .sav file, so do a separate save (and back it up just to be sure), find the right save folder in NearInfinity, then open torment.gam and change mebbeth_art_answer back to 0. This means you'll have to run all the errands again but don't worry because the NPCs and vendors won't be stuck or anything like that. After that you'll be able to become a mage and continue playing.

And again, thanks very much for your answer!
