this games has HARDCORE english.

I played it a year ago for the first time, in english, also because I felt confident I would understand everything and wanted a bit of english practice.

Oh boy. It is really hardcore. I could not play on weekdays, it was too much work. On weekends though, I could play for 6 hours straight - what an english boost!

Though there is a lot of unusual english - "pike off, berk" and the like.

anyway, I recommend playing it in english. But my second playthrough in a few months will be with czech translation (which is supposed to be great) - I do not want to work on it again and want to have it more comfortable : )
This is my first play through, and I'm enjoying it very much.

I am so happy there's no grinding for hours on end just to get higher levels or more money just so publishers can say the game is 40+ hours long. :D

The thing I noticed almost immediately is, even though there's really not much of it at all compared to written dialogue, the voice acting is amazing.
Installed it, the widescreen mod, and the fan fixes last night. I'll be starting my first run through it this evening.
It's been a long time since I completed this game, which is actually good, as I probably can't remember everything, but I do remember this game being really great!
I especially liked that the world is very weird, so at first I didn't understand a lot of what was going on, but it was very interesting to "decode" the world as I played through the game. :-)

I do remember a bug or maybe a flaw in the game design, which happened near the end of the game. I was in a cave with no way of escaping, and I had to answer some riddles, and because I had made a Kickass (but stupid) fighter I couldn't answer all the riddles!

I found out that I had to have a Wisom score of at least 15 to answer all the riddles, if my Wisdom was below 15 I would simply not get to choose an answer.

Now, I don't know if these fanpatches fixes this problem, but if you play the game without fanfixes and gets stuck, you can find an editor online that can raise the wisdom to whatever you need.

Sephirath: My sub purpose in playing that game is to improve my English. Despite the fact that I have the case like yours (getting tired while reading) I want to keep determined and achieve my goals. Finishing so complex plot with reading every single line will be a great equivalent of an expensive language course ;)

And maybe a little offtopic: I will start learning French this October as it is my chosen second language on my studies :)
While I fully endorse buying and playing Torment, there is one caveat: this is a really inappropriate game to learn English. Quite the opposite - it takes an advanced knowledge of the language to truly appreciate the Planar Cant.

If you are not experienced you should take extra care not to incorporate made up slang into your regular vocabulary, which can be hard, considering how enthralling the story is. The Cant really tends to grow on you.

I consider my English quite developed by now, it is just said that I should read way more to become more fluent in various expressions. Maybe it's just a general method, maybe it's just me but the more time I spent in the "English environment" (movies, tv shows, books, articles) the more I learn. And it counts even for structures that I've heard once, somewhere.

And as an add-on: I like to play with the dictionary on my knees. So, still hoping that P:T will be a good school for me ;)
Yup, it's my first time too.

I hope the game will treat me gently... <3

But seriously now, I love the dialogue - it has that same lovely finesse the Legacy of Kain series had, and more. I remember trying it out a couple of years ago and saying to myself I won't play it until I buy it myself. It was just that good! The Mortuary itself is just 3 floors - it took me 3 hours to explore everything! And then THE HIVE! SIGIL! I think I won't leave the City of Doors for a full week, minimum.

(Speaking of which, BLOOD OMEN IS YOUR NEXT TARGET GOG.)

Hm. I disagree. I consider Torment one of the games that really helped me with learning and improving my English. I am studying for a MA in Creative Writing in English, in the UK now - and used to teach writing at university level too. I think torment did a lot in terms of really opening up the language and discovering nuances of it.

I only really started getting into the more advanced level literature in English after playing this game. As a base for my studies it was really, really useful.

Nnexxus: I juste hope I can use this resolution patch to push it to 1024*600 so I can play it comfortably on my netbook.
Did you pull that off, or does the game crash as well as BG2 in this resolution? If so, didn't you happen to stumble upon some kind of workaround?

Edit: Hmm, 1024 x 576 might work...

Yes, I've been playing about 5h and no problem so far, I can play fullscreen in 1024*600 on the netbook. By the way, BG2 works fine for me at that resolution too (but I haven't had time to play it seriously).
Actually, I am currently in the middle of writing my Master's Thesis on the various English dialects/linguistic codes present within the game. And yes, there are quite a few of them.
