gamesfreak64: However, i must admit I installed it on win XP SP3, i didnot install it on win7 64bit,(so maybe thats causing it?)
avatar
YnK: Maybe, but on my PC it seems to be perfectly capable of running even without being properly installed, with the same settings, with no compatibility mode, as long as all its files are intact... which is strange, because this kind of error is known to be fixable by reinstalling the game (unless the cause was a combination of the widescreen mod and a video card not set to support the chosen resolution).

Considering where the game is installed, Win7 and its UAC shouldn't interfere with it; I assume you've probably already tried running it in XP compatibility mode since it works on the actual WinXP. Wiping out the files in the "cache" subfolder can help with some errors, but yours happen before it even starts loading anything (and if there were any corrupted files, it probably would refuse to work on XP just the same, though who knows?). So if it's an OS problem, it may be something that depends on the specific configuration. Curious.
Yup, i did try all these things you mentioned.
Funny thing is that i had win7 updates, i rarely use win7 so i started it up (once a week or so to check the updates)
the recommende critical ones, i seldom use the optional updates cause they used to mess up my windows, i know that from experience , been using since win95 on my 100 mhz 8 mb pc with a small hd (that was long time ago)
And some games started to give problems, now i dont believe in the supernatural, I dont believe in anything for that matter, but if i did you would say that i have ghosts in my pc :D hahaha

Ah well, if it wont work theres no man overboard, as long as some games work i am a happy camper.
Question: if i had win7 32bits (if there is one) would the problems be the same? or is it because of the 64 bit that most stuff wont work?

I am using Win7 64 bit, and everything works perfectly. However, I don't think I've installed any updates for quite some time (maybe a few months or longer - kept forgetting to do this). So it is possible that some of those are responsible for the game not working.

I'm not quite sure, since in that case there would've been more reports of such errors (I've seen some before, but those were pretty old). But this does technically confirm that it's a system configuration issue, i.e. the problem isn't that it's Win7 64 bit, but that it has something installed that caused issues with some programs. Tracking down what it is is the hardest part. I would still make the updates the prime suspect, then look at what else I have running (like video/audio, etc.)

(Why do I always fail to trigger the errors other people claim to have, even just for debugging? XD)

I update the win7 as soon as the updates are available, also did that with the previous windows I owned.

I got King Of Dragon Pass to work on WinXP 32bit SP3
when i totally closed the mbam tool(which is a excellent anti malware protection software ( i can recommend it to anyone who needs malware protection)

However KODPshows a large window called Mplayer, inside is the game window,
but the game is not what i expected it would be, i think HOMM is far better :D

KODP: The texts are using custom fonts and they are horrible to read...
the designer should have used a normal defauld fonts like times or something
cause these fonts no matter how large i make them aren't simply readable.

Mbam tool however works flawlessly with todays software, never got a problem (only with KODP)
most of the older games i bought work without problems..

KODP is an exception, but since KODP isnt quite what i thought it would be (i got only 'blinded' by the graphics, which made me think it was the kinda game i like to play (but its not) so thats not bad that kodp wont work with mbam, cause i wont play it, its not my kind of game. I keep playing Homm and games like that :D

So the KODP problem is solved.
Now I only need the Planescape Torment to work under my win7 64bit
it runs good under win XP sp3, but i need it to work under win7 64bits.

So i am quite a happy camper now that one problem has been solved, thanks.

Planescape Torment: I installed it under win7-64bits earlier this afternoon

cause Icewindale also gave kind of same errors under win7, when i launched it, BUT
under win7 the drive letters are mapped differen, so some letter like E will be J or L, maybe that has something to do with it aswell (but usually it doesnt cause most of the games i bought refer to the map its installed in regardless if the drive letter is e or H)

Then I rememberd: all games based on the 'engine' from Baldurs Gate display weird message if for some reason they can't find a silly path or a simple config or ini files.

These game must be installed under each windows, so if someone would have 4 windows he need 4 installs
for games that are made with the engine that Baldus Gate uses.
Or you have to reboot the pc and select another windows in order just to play one game

So Installing the game under win7 solved the problem. :D
I have not played the game yet so i don't know what problemes will arise if i play it.
For now it starts up, no errors and all seems ok including the graphics.

So i am a happy camper reagrding this game.

Now i am working on the Warlord Battlecry 1 and 2 problems, the startup okay but....
i will explain in the forum about these games

*headdesk* So I was right when I asked you to check the paths, technically - the second OS would load the same file, but won't find the destination because it uses a different letter for the same drive, and IE-based games use full paths for their settings, including the drive letter. That... is inconvenient. So, no, somebody with 4 Windows versions could do with just one installation, they would just have to take care to manually map the drive letters so that they match on all systems (which I would really recommend doing, BTW, as it'll eliminate this issue completely - see my comment in your Broken Sword 2 thread).

And your two installations won't share saved games, because those are inside the game folder, which I assume is now different for each system - so you'll have to copy them over each time. Either keep your games on a drive that has the same letter on both OSes, if there's one, or map the drives so they match. I mean, just think how many older games are going to have such issues - back then, most people only had a single HDD/partition with a single OS, so that wasn't a problem, but nowadays...

Yup you were right, i admit, but the words were a bit tech, and i am not tech so thats why i misundertood the info.
Yes the drive letters, i know, i will be more carefull when the xp is gone and a new windows is installed on the drives, thanx again for the reply.

I'm having this same issue. I have the D:\Games installed on a Raid 0 array. The game does work if I move the game folder to my OS SSD but as someone above mentioned I also have had this game running on this Raid 0 Drive under windows 7 before. i can't for the life of my figure out what has changed with this now. I've been running games on an array for years and have never had an issue with this game.
