I bought a copy of this game from Gamersgate like... 2 or 3 years back, and was enjoying it quite a bit, but had to stop when merely casting a spell would cause the game to lag - or, on the higher level spells, CTD. Eventually I figured out the issue was with DirectDraw, or some other sprite mapping software technique from the early 00s. However, turning it off also created some rather noticeable "trails" when moving the mouse around. Which is quite, again, noticeable. When I got to the mid-game and enemies started throwing around 7th level spells where I think it straight up cuts to FMV, I found it very difficult to play and eventually stopped around the famous question.

So, my question is if the version sold here works differently than the one included with the D&D Master Collection Anthology. I can't imagine it does, but I've heard enough good things about GOG that I figure I might as well ask before dropping the 10 dollars to replay/finish such a memorable game. I'm not opposed to re-buying games I already own, but... y'know. Due diligence.

at one time (still?), GoG's PST was installing http://bitpatch.com/ie_ddrawfix.html by default:
which should be enough for Vista & Win7

for Win8: http://www.shsforums.net/topic/48732-ddraw-fix-for-slowdownsstuttering/page-6#entry569502
or DxWnd

Hi aqrit, yes, GOG's installer still applies your DDrawFix at the end of the installation process.

I don't know about Gamersgate's version, but with aqrit's DDrawFix GOG's version works in most cases out-of-the box and if it doesn't, updating your graphic drivers or switching from emulated DirectDraw to WineD3D's library (via setup-ddrawfix.exe) should fix it.
