When I first entered the Clerk's Ward I visited Finam the Linguist's house because in my adventures I had acquired Finam's Book and thought I might benefit from returning it to him. But I got no useful dialog options from talking to Finam. So, I left and continued to play through the level.

Now I have picked up the dodecahedron and need the Linguist's help. So this is the logical time visit him. But every time I try to enter Finam's house, the game crashes. I'm left back at the Windows desktop, no mouse cursor and Planescape running, but unresponsive. I have to alt-ctrl-del to log out and back in again to kill the game and bring back the cursor.

I've tried reforming my party various times. I've gone off and done some side quests, and saved at other parts of the ward. But still the game crashes when trying to load the interior of Finam's House.

I can load earlier save games, and enter Finam's house. So, as a last resort I could go back to the latest save where I can still do so and play from there. But if I did that I'd be dumping *hours* of play time. I'd really rather not.

I searched the web and found a thread at rpgcodex from August 2012, where user TwinkieGorilla was having the same issue. He had installed the game from discs not from GOG. The problem was solved when a Planescape Torrent modder named Scient had TwinkieGorilla send him his planescape .exe file, patched it for him, then sent it back! This doesn't seem like a solution that will scale well.

I am running on a brand new Asus laptop with a 1.7GHz Core i5 and 6GB of RAM running Windows 8. It's new, but not too fast. Should be fast enough for this, though.

I installed Planescape Torment 2.0 with these mods: Bigg's Widescreen Mod v3.05, Ghostdog's UI Mod v2.2, Ultimate WeiDU Fixpack v413, Qwinn's PS:T Tweak Pack v412.

I have also installed PST on a desktop machine running Windows 7 along with all the same mods above, then copied over my save games. But the exact same crashing behavior happens there, as well.

I don't think I can progress in the game without going into Finam's house to have him translate the dodecahedron. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Try deleting all files from the games \temp and \cache folders.

Anyway, the problem seems to be due to widescreen mod. If the above method dosen't work, try to run the game using another resolution or uninstalling this mod.
Thanks Herr Doctor. I deleted the contents of the Cache and Temp directories. But that didn't seem to help.

There are no options to change screen resolution within the game. I think I would have to re-run the Widescreen Mod and select another resolution. Would this not render my saved games unusable?

Really don't want to restart the game from the beginning ...

That's what I meant.
I don't think that changing the resolution should invalidate your savegames, but uniinstalling the mod could do.

Read this thread and particularly this post: maybe this fix could help.

thanks again. I'll try it.
Read this too.
I'm having the same problem. Tried everything I could find, and I've been working on this for the past three days. Nothing seems to work.

What I've tried:

- Everything in this thread or the one dr.schliemann refers to;
- Installing the 2.20 version of the widescreen mod;
- Uninstalling everything, including the game itself, and installing everything again, multiple times (one for each version of the WS mod);
- Hex-editing the exe as described in here, but I simply couldn't find that string anywhere in the file;
- In fact, everything on the link above as well;
- Using the fix provided by Scient in another thread here on GOG which I just can't find right now;
- Editing savegames;
- Cheating;
- Praying to the Lady of Pain;
- Threatening to throw my PC away if it doesn't do something right;
- Probably a lot more, but it's all a blur after three days trying.

Nothing solved my problem... and I was so engrossed by this game, thought I was finally going to finish it after all these years (this is my third attempted playthrough). Can someone find a solution to this? Any help will be much appreciated.

Oops, my bad. Turns out I was searching for the string in ASCII, not in hexadecimal. After realizing my mistake, it worked like a charm.

So, if anybody out there is still having trouble, here's what you do, as explained by Scient in the RPG Codex forums; I'm re-posting here just for convenience's sake, for the Goddess alone (Eris, not the Lady of Pain) knows how long it took me to find an answer:

- Open Torment.exe with any hexadecimal editor;
- Search for this string: 10 8B 45 0C C1 E0 03 8B 4D EC 83 C1 07 3B C1 76
- Replace with this one: 00 8B 45 0C C1 E0 03 8B 4D EC 83 C1 07 3B C1 EB
- Open your game, enter the linguist's house, scream HELL YEAH!

That last step is optional, but it's extremely satisfying. :)

I said it in the RPG Codex forum, and I'll say it again: thank you, Scient (I know you lurk around here as well), you have saved my sanity!

I've hit the same problem and searching for that string in torment.exe doesn't turn up any results :(

Are you sure you're searching as hex and not as ascii? I just hit this problem, and replacing the string as Truehare described fixed it (thanks!). It was definitely in the Torment.exe binary installed as part of 2.0.0.8 on my PC.
