Hello, everybody.

I recently bought this pack (my old disks sadly don't work anymore, so I was glad to catch it here on GoG), but my joy is somewhat overshadowed by the problem that keyboard numpad controls are choppy and the mouse sometimes "hangs"/stutters across the screen instead of moving smoothly. The sound/music also displays this behaviour sometimes. Overall, it seriously hampers my effort to enjoy this gem.
Anybody around who had the same problem and was successfully able to correct it?

If it matters, I did not change any settings in the graphic setup that is included with the GoG version and neither did I change any DosBox configs or anything. I am running stock, so to say. I use a Logitech G700 wireless mouse and have the latest Logitech drivers on my system.

If any other info is necessary, please ask and I will do my best to supply the answer.

Thank you, peeps, and best regards.

It could be that your machine is not powerful enough to run this game in Dosbox. The game itself doesn't require a very powerful machine but emulators like Dosbox tend to have a very large overhead.

Mh. The PC isn't the newest, true, but I would think that a Core I7-920 (watercooled, running at 4GHz) with 24GB RAM and an ATI Radeon HD5870 should have enough power to run it. I am no expert, though. And before anyone asks, yes, I tried resetting the CPU to stock speed, but that does not change the symptoms I am experiencing.

How much overhead does DosBox create, anyways? Because the other GoG games I have that make use of DosBox seem to run fine. Which irritates me a bit.

Maybe I should take a look at the config and try some different settings than the GoG supplied ones.

Your CPU and GPU should be powerful enough. gog would have a lot of trouble selling games if it wasn't ;-)

Graphics emulation is generates the most overhead. You might try switching graphics output to DirectDraw or OpenGL. There's probably an item called "graphics setup" in the Pirates Gold folder in the Start menu that will give you an easy way to access this.
Well, in the Graphic Setup menu, I switched from "Surface" to "Direct3D" (tried "OpenGL" as well) and the problem is less noticeable now. Not completely gone, and the game sometimes just locks up, but more playable than before for certain.

Thank you for your help, gnarbrag. I appreciate it.
Same problem, tried DD, D3D, OpenGL. No real change. Tried changing Priority, Affinity. 2nd older game from GOG with issues.
