I have the PoE base game. I bought it a few years back but never ended up completing it (I suffered a hard drive crash; lost my save; and didn't feel like starting the whole game again at that point).

I did really like the game and I am planning to try another run through soon (it's been long enough now that starting over won't seem too repetitive). However, I am wondering whether it would be worth getting the White March expansion. It seems to have good reviews, but I am a bit put off by what I am reading about it being very combat-heavy compared to the base game. It sounds quite a lot like a PoE 'clone' of Icewind Dale, which doesn't seem hugely appealing.

What attracts me more about it are some of the non-content-related improvements: i.e. the improved AI and raised level cap (I have heard the levels cap out a bit early in the base game). However, it seems hard to justify the price based on those alone.

What are people's impressions of the White March, for those that have played it? Aside from the combat encounters, does it have an interesting plot, quests, characters? Does it complement the base game well? Is it worth the price (it seems like a very expensive DLC, given the base game's age)?
My personal experience with the expansion was that the overall quality was on the level of the base game. There are new companions, new locations to explore, new story, quests and new types of items (soulbound). All of these are really enjoyable in my opinion. The story is not directly connected with the plot of the main game, but adds a lot to the lore and I was positively surprised by the end.
Don't remember details I'm afraid, it's been too many years now, but my general impression was that White March was better than the main game. By that I mean that the quality was really good, and it made more consistent sense than the main story.

It adds some new NPCs (companions), which may be interesting? Quite a few new enemies and areas too, if that is of interest. I suppose it was a bit combat focused, it's part of the story of it, but not as much as Icewind Dale to Baldur's Gate.

It's worth it, if you like the base game. Don't expect the DLCs to be something heavily different than base PoE. Maybe there's a little more combat there, as you noted, but it's still a very good expansion. I wouldn't call it Icewind Dale though, because IWD was even more combat oriented than White March. If won't have enough of the game once you reach the DLCs areas, you'll most certainly enjoy them.
Ok, thanks for your comments. It sounds like it is a good quality expansion that is worth playing. I'll put it on my wishlist and see if I can pick it up on sale at some point. I think I got the base game for about $10 on sale, so it would seem a bit nuts to pay $25 for White March. There are many full RPGs that cost less than that.
I thought the plot was better than the main game.
