Greetings,

I have bought White March on Gog (first timer) while Pillars of eternity (and al my other games) are on steam, now I cant install the extension because Gog thinks I don't own the 'base product'. Is there any way to install it?

Any advice what I should do?

Thanks in advance!

Don't take personally, but, WHY you did that? WHY ?
Clearly Gog's site for the White March (Under requirements) stated that: PLEASE NOTE: The White March expansion requires Pillars of Eternity to be installed and patched to version 2.0 or newer in order to play

And the way Steam operates do not accept software installed by third entities (such as Gog). So, why you did that mix ?

Anyway, my recommendation is that you try to request a refund from Gog (as you are unable to play the expansion) and stay with the main game on Steam (at least, the refund policy for Steam still apply for your game, then... go with the DRM-free slogan)
Yep wasnt thinking.

Bought another version on steam, with part two of the extension. All my games are on steam so it is easier this way.

Although it wasnt the answer i was hopng for I appreciate the reply, so thanks!
Glad I found this post before pulling the trigger while White March is on sale on GOG. Seems like they should clarify the system requirement. I have PoE installed on my system, so according to their wording, it should work. It doesn't say "GOG version must be installed" so how would I know that my Steam version isn't compatible?

Of course I was skeptical so I searched for an answer first and thankfully found this thread.

Steam games with such a requirement always specify "Must have Steam version of base game installed" so GOG should take a lesson from that :) Just my 2c

Think about this for a moment: Steam and Galaxy (GOG) are rival platforms. Why would one installation work on another? Come on, it's simple common sense.
It's strange that GOG would let you buy it without owning the base game anyway!

Why wouldn't they? You don't have to own a car to buy a car battery.

Steam doesn't let you buy DLC unless you own the base game, precisely to avoid situations like this.

There's a huge difference: GOG sells DRM free games. If I bought a hard copy of PoE, why shouldn't I be able to buy the DLC from GOG? Your argument doesn't hold up for GOG.

Incidentally, Pillars of Eternity does have a DRM-free DVD version, and you can't install GOG's DLC on it. Or GOG's patches. (IIRC only backers who got complete version of the game with DLC also got the physical DVD of the game, so WM was delivered to them via patches.)

GOG uses a combination of registry entries and files in the game's folder to indentify version of a game - if a game's developer would be able to supply this data with his version of the game, I suppose all versions could be made compatible with GOG (including Steam version.) Alternatively I'm pretty sure you could dissect GOG installer and just copy the files over into your installation updated to the right version to make the DLC work. But neither's really supported by GOG.

In fact, I don't know of a single game on GOG which would allow for installation of its patches/DLC into a non-GOG version, so yes, it really doesn't make too much sense to allow for accounts to purchase DLC when they don't own the base game - unless they buy the base game via one account and then buy the DLC via another one.

Ah, the GOG proprietary packages. You're right, and I should have taken that into account. My mistake.

You should give it a try sometime. Just to see what happens.

You can still purchase it as a gift. A gift which you will be unable to redeem to your account without owning the base game. Unless you fight with support about it, but that user & situation may have been more of a one off.
