Some crew questions about Pillars of Eternity 2

The maximum skill ranks for a crew member is 4, but what is the maximum level they can get to (not sailor skill rank, class level i mean, so fighter of # level, rogue of # level etc)?

Also the Boatswain skill. It is said that the boatwain skill can act like the deckhand skill. Does that mean that if you place someone with a boatswain skill of 3 into a deckhand slot on a ship, they will act as a deckhand with three skill?
If so, does that mean if a crew member had a boatsawin skill of 2 and a deckhand skill of 2, if put into the deckshand slot they would have a 4skill, and if put into the boatwain slot they would have a skill of 2?

Answers from anyone who knows for sure will be appreciated :)
The level cap for the PC and all the companions/sidekicks is 20. So plan accordingly. Max XP is 190.000.

As far as I understand every ship crew member acts with the skill level they have in the function they have those skills in. So if you put a skill level 3 bootswain in another slot, they won't perform at skill level 3 there, since they are only level 3 in bootswain and nothing else. Don't know where you've heard that boatswain and deckhand would be the same thing. Sounds weird.

A boatswain is the senior member of the deck department on a ship, but for the purposes of the game mechanics this does not translate to being a deckhand. They are two different things entirely in PoE..

This info:

"Boatswain: The boatswain counts as a deckhand, but is more important for their ability to accelerate the completion of special events (such as putting out a deck fire) on the ship by coordinating their actions."

From this site:

Makes it sound like the Boatswain skill can be used as Deckhand skill, but yeh it doesn't (checked in combat - speed to close was slower with a boatswain in deckhand position).
Crew members can level to 20 too? Whoa, that might make them overpowered with enough XP.

No. They can't. Ship crew members only have these 4 skill levels. The level 20 part was only about party members.

Ok.

So crew:
maximum (total) skill rank = 4
maximum class level = 4 (although I am sure two of my crew members has levelled up 5 times now (yes I was watching, may hire another crew member just to test again in case I made a mistake) - they have not levelled lately though, but I will keep an eye on this).
Also there is a crew member that starts off at level 9 (the ogre), saw this in the game files.

Also, thanks for the replies.

Another question:

Does a crew members equipment upgrade when they get to higher levels?
Normal to fine to exceptional etc.

Answers appreciated.

Ship crew members don't have any equipment. Only companions/party members. And those have to be equipped manually, like the PC.

Beodul has a breastplate, battle axe and medium shield, you can see this in ship to ship combat when he is there.
i was in the middle of adding their stock equipment to this site

https://pillarsofeternity.gamepedia.com/Pillars_of_Eternity_II:_Deadfire_crew_members

I have added the crew members classes (well progression table). Someone else already had the rest of the information put in there.

I just wandered if their stock equipment "scaled" to their level as they levelled up.
Does anyone know who can answer?
I know they can't have their equipment changed (which is shame).
