When the Definitive Edition of Pillars of Eternity released last year, I remember that there was a bit of outrage on the forums, because it included some exclusive content that wasn't available for people who bought any of the previous editions. I haven't been following the discussion since then, so I'm wondering if anyone has more information about this. Was this problem ever resolved, and if not, what content are early adopters missing out on?

I saw that DLC, but one of the reviews mentions that there's still some stuff that's exclusive to the Definitive Edition. That's why I was confused, but maybe that review is wrong? Are you sure that the base game + White March expansions + the Deadfire pack is exactly the same as owning the Definitive Edition?
It seems that Definitive Edition is formally PoE, Expansion Pass, Deadfire Pack and Royal Edition Upgrade, so they are right in that sense.

"All premium content originally sold with Pillars of Eternity: Royal Edition, including the original soundtrack, a digital collector's book, an original novella set in the Pillars universe, and much, much more."

(Includes Royal Edition upgrade)

However, these are all external bonuses. Content-wise from in-game perspective, you don't lose anything compared to Definitive Edition if you don't have Royal Edition.
Oh, okay, I had assumed that there was some new content they had created and then exclusively packaged with the Definitive Edition. If it's just the Royal Edition bonus content, then that's fine. I checked my library, and have all of the Royal Edition bonuses, even though I only bought the Champion Edition, so I guess previous owners must've been upgraded to the Royal Edition. Anyway, thanks for the replies.
