I started the game over with the patch, and really I hadn't gotten too far into it before anyway. I know HOW to enchant, but what I don't know should be easy for anyone far enough into the game to answer ......

What determines how many enchantments can go on armor?

I know just basic armor can only hold 1 enchantment. Is it always this way with armor (or anything enchantable for that matter)?

Or do the 3 degrees of upgrades on armor allow an extra enchantment each? For instance (I forget the terms), 1st upgrade allows 2 enchants, 2nd upgrade allows 3, and 3rd upgrade allows 4?

I'm hoping its the latter so I can have multiple attribute enchantments on my team's armors. Also, I don't want to waste any rare ingredient if it would be better to save it until I get the fullest upgraded armor for each character.

Thanks

I don't know the written specifics, but in my playthrough I had armour enchanted with quality, attribute and proofing, but you have to reach a certain level with certain enchantments, for example you have to reach levels 4, 8 and 12 to enchant to 'fine', 'exceptional' and 'superb' quality respectively. There may be other restrictions than just level, though.
So you can only enchant one per list?

In other words, I couldn't put 2 or 3 attribute enchantments on one piece of armor?

Or put a better way, 1 quality enchant, 1 attribute enchant, and 1 proof enchant - for a total of 3 enchants ...... but only 1 enchant of each type?

That's the better wording to my convoluted question above ;)

No, you can only have one attribute enhancement. Best to wait until you're able to use the +2 enhancements, particularly on special armour.
Great thanks, thats what I was looking for.

Is my edit above correct then?

Yes, that's correct, one from each category.
Thank you once again, Hickory

Enchanting Key Points (not in the game manual):

- Each item may carry up to 3 enchantments at any one time, one from each group.
- Each item may only carry a number of enchantments whose total 'enchantment slots' add up to 12. Enchantment slots are tracked/ indicated by the number w/ the anvil symbol.
- Enchantments are NOT removable!
- Enchantments ARE, however, replaceable, with another enchantment from the same group of equal or greater slots/ impact. Examples:
-'Damage 1' can be upgraded to 'Fine' - since it is a replacement of a feature, it will just use up the 2 enchantment slots for 'Fine' - you won't lose the slot required originally for 'Damage 1';
-'Burning Lash' is equivalent to 'Shocking Lash', so Burning Lash can be replaced with Shocking Lash...which can be replaced again with Freezing, then set back to Burning, etc, etc, ...as long as you are willing to pay for it.
- The ability to apply higher impact enchantments is limited based on the current level of your character. (I think this is always based on the level of the 'Watcher' protagonist, but I'm not entirely sure since I have enchanted little with other toons.)
- The item being enchanted must have enough unused 'enchantment slots' to combine with the slots used by the current same-type enchantment to accommodate the total slots needed for the higher level enchantment. Example: A 'Fine' weapon, with 2 anvils already used for 'Fine' quality, would need to have 2 unused enchantment slots remaining in order to receive the 'Exceptional' enchantment, since 'Exceptional' requires a total of 4 anvils.
- Inherent weapon TYPE benefits, like +5 Accuracy for all Spears, DO stack with similar effects from enchantment, and do NOT interfere with the enchantment.
- Many found-in-game higher quality weapons and Unique weapons show some 'enchantment slots' already used, e.g. 4/12 anvils. Those already used 'enchantment slots' ARE subject all limits/ procedures stated above for previous and subsequent enchantments.
- SOME Unique weapons have features/ enchantments which DO NOT use standard enchantment slots, or show used 'anvils'. THOSE features DO NOT interfere with or limit additional enchantments. Features/ abilities of a Unique item which have not used any 'anvils' WILL persist even if you enchant further to raise the quality or add other 'standard' enchantment features.

Yours is the best explanation that I have found on the topic yet. Thank you, dreamrider!

Thank you, this is excellent stuff. +1 enchantment to the post ;)

Being new to the game, not knowing how the money situation will be, whether there are exceptional items you can buy for a truckload of money later (like a certain item of clothing for wizards in Baldur's Gate 2), or whether we pick up great weapons and armour and such as we play through the game -- is it worth it to enchant e.g. weapons even early on?

I suffer from the HOARD EVERYTHING talent in RPGs, saving it up for a good use later, but will there be enough plants and whatnot for continually enchanting stuff? Not done it once yet, at level 5, but we have picked up some unique and Fine items.
