Hi everyone,
so far I thought the lockpicking/ Mechanics system was very straightforward, but now I am a bit lost. I am currently in the sewers of Raedric's hold and there is a prison cell with someone inside. The door says: "Skill required: "Mechanics 4 + 5 Lockpicks OR 5 Mechanics".
Neither in my party has 5 Mechanics, but my PC and Durance have both Mechanics 4 and in my inventory are 13 Lockpicks. So requirement 1 is met, requirement 2 is not. However if I try to open the door with either character I get "Lockpicking failed" every time. The lockpicks in my inventory do not decrease either. What am I doing wrong?

are the lockpicks in the inventory of the Character with mechanics?

If it still doesn't work, you can get the cell key from a certain character down in the dungeons, but you will have to fight.
I think the picks need to be in the inventory of the one selected to do the picking. Could that be it?
The game's help pages (ingame in the journal) tell me that the keys don't need to be in the inventory of the character. They are in the stash and I cannot put them back in the character's inventory. The stash covers the inventory page and I haven't figured out how to cirumvent it.

You can move the stash page freely across the screen ;)
Good to know. I will try it out and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for your replies. :3
With the exception of quest items (which are moved automatically into your stash) items (like picks, hooks, crowbars) need to be in your party, not your stash, in order to use them. :)

Edit: I'm lying. Just used a grappling hook somewhere while I hadn't one in my inventory. Sorry. >_>

I see - good to know. Then the description is a little misleading. In any case no having the lockpicks in the inventory was the key. I could pick that lock now. Thanks everybody. :)
Funny thing is I have the same issue, but with the lock picks in my PC's inventory and it still doesn't work. Where specifically?

2nd floor of the Doemenel mansion after killing everyone, that chest requires 6 mechanics and 7 picks, and it is in white, and I have triple checked to make sure I meet the requirements, and I have tried with lock picks in my inventory and in my stash.

I believe the bug is related to the fact that lock picks in the inventory are in sets of 5.
