So, I got an "important" quest yesterday, Battle of Yenwood against Gathbin, and spent all my time trying to beat it. Finally caved and looked it up. I read that it is an optional quest despite the Marshall making it sound like if I don't do something I'm going to lose my Keep? I'd rather not do this battle, since:
1: it's going to take all my money from me
2. it's going to "reward" me by taking a cut of my taxes just when I'll need them most
3. apparently two of the armies can only be defeated in the scripted battle by allies you can only get with the White March expansion (which I didn't buy since I didn't know if I'd like the base game)

SO my question is: is the battle optional? can I skip it until I replay the game with the white march expansion pass?

Short answer: yes. Longer answer: I fought it twice; once with expansion ogres, once without. Go back to it towards the end, when your party is at a higher level and bring at least 2 spell casters, as well as the priest.

The battle is optional, not sure if has an impact on the ending story (Together to the master of the endless patch?)

If you read the dialogue with the marshall. He state that Gathbin will face A LOT of (non-unintentionally) issues before hes is ready to attack you. That is the excuse of the developer for letting you to take as much time as you want.

ok, thanks, guys! I guess level 6 is too low a level. I'll clear some of the areas and level up some before trying again.
