Hi,

I am having CTD issues with Pharaoh Gold GOG that I purchased a while back.

I am running Windows 10 version 1903, i9 9900k, Nvidia RTX 2080.

I have read all of the available forum posts regarding this game's freezing and CTD issues, to no avail.

I have tried all of the troubleshooting options with some interesting results:
- my game initially with a clean install would freeze after 15 minutes.
- I read suggestions around replacing the game's .dll files with that of Zeus+Poseidon, which I did. Game no longer freezes but will CTD now after some time.
- the resizing widescreen patch resulted in a very fast CTD within minutes of playing.
- running the game on win95 comp. makes it freeze. Win98 comp. runs but will eventually CTD. Same goes for WinXP and Win7 comp modes.
- I have tried used a patched .exe that I read off some other forum. The in-game music would eventually freeze in a loop but the game would continue playing.
- Running the game without any compatibility mode will end up with the game freezing at some point, usually 15 min in the game, with the music freezing.

Short of installing Win 7 with VMWare to create a separate GOG gaming environment, I am open to any suggestions!

Thank you in advance,

edit:

Downgrading my resolution to 1920x1080 from my native 2,560 x 1,440 seems to make it more stable for the moment.

edit2: Running the game again today resulted in a crash with my desktop downscaled. I have a wallpaper engine running in the background that provies me with a moving desktop background. Exiting this program now allows me to run the game.

There are two more things you can try. I've read about people getting the game to run in windowed mode, which isn't ideal, but I think is something that often works.
You'll have to use your google-fu, but this might be a start: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=822513452
And, as I think you already mentioned, a virtual environment like virtual pc or something similar.

Also, concerning this bit
" I have tried used a patched .exe that I read off some other forum. The in-game music would eventually freeze in a loop but the game would continue playing."
There are ways to fix the looping sound for these games:

I would like to draw attention to the fact that it is necessary to change a pair.
There is evidence to support that replacing just one mss32 gives ostensible stability.

Regular freezes/crashes of the game are associated with a bug in the playback of sounds.

Especially strong when "Compatibility WindowsXP(sp2/sp3)"
Use "Compatibility Windows95/98"

The user reports that after updating mss32.dll and MP3DEC.ASI the problem was solved.
