Oh God... why do old games have to be such a problem?

I have a 16:10 widescreen monitor, and I just want to run the game at a resolution that works. The alternate pharaoh.exe files that are supposed to run the game in different resolutions, contained in the cleopatra.7z file simply do not change anything at all whatsoever. Even the in-game options don't work, so I can't try "windowed mode" if I want to.

To top it all off, I can't pan the map with my mouse, because if I move the cursor to the sides of the game's viewing area even slightly, it instantaneously shoots me all the way to the very edge of the map.

Any advice? It would be very much appreciated.

Edit: Seriously? Nobody has responded yet?

Install the new .exe and launch the game directly through it (not via gog shortcut). Then, in options, switch resolution to 1024x768. Resolution selected by replace exe will be loaded instead.
Probably nobody saw the thread when you posted it and then ended up buried by other discussions.

To your other point about the movement speed, the default game and scroll speed in the GOG.com version is 100%. You should lower scroll speed to about 70%, which is more than fast enough.
