It seems that saving has become an afterthought for a lot of devs. I do not know if I am in the minority on this, but a proper save function is important to me, at least.
I also do not know who at Slipgate Ironworks makes those decisions, but Phantom Fury follows on the 'we don't care to implement a proper manual save function' mentality of both Wrath and Graven, both of which I backed in EA in the hopes their save systems would be temporary solutions - shows I'm not cynical enough, yet, I guess.
This time, however, I learned my lesson. I know one lost sale means nothing to anyone, but I want to at least have said it so I know the devs have a chance to know:
I love retro shooters in the vein of Quake, Duke and SiN, and as stated, I am prepared to shell out a few bucks just to give a few hopefuls a better chance at seeing an actual release date.
Not being able to save at will has now become a reason to not buy a title for me - I am an adult with regrettably adult responsibilities and limited free time. I do not appreciate when a game wastes my time by limiting when and how often I can save, and having to redo parts of a level I already did serves nothing but to annoy me.
And I do not play games that annoy me as a result of an easily preventable design flaw.
As such: I've had Phantom Fury on my wishlist for a long time, even after the tepid reception to the demo. I was camp "let them cook". In fact, I have just put fresh funds into my GOG wallet for a bit of weekend shopping, with my eye on Phantom Fury. [edit: Shout-out to GmanLives for actually mentioning the save system!]. Sadly, SI cooked without salt, my copy stays unbought, and the funds go to other titles.
I doubt anyone will care enough to patch in a proper save function, so I guess I will be replaying Ion Fury for my Shelly fix, and I can tell you: I will be properly appreciating the fact it comes with a fully fledged save system.
Never mind my chagrin, though; Have a good weekend, everyone, and may at least something nice happen to all y'all!
