Hi, I had real problems with a stealthy approach for my first KGB mission. The issue is that I couldn't see where the guards where on the first floor.

What I wanted to do was run up and crouch down behind the cover available, but they just seem to stand up and get spotted. Do agents not hide behind cover in this game?
I had 1 of my agents out in the open when the guard walk over. Not sure yet if cover means anything in terms of guards being able to spot you. I think full cover should hide agents and half cover should not.

You cannot hide, you just can stand behind some BIG cover so enemies will not see you. I.e. you can stand behind a corner or some bulky thing, but you cannot crouch behind sofa or, say, a dresser.
I bet the Agents would get this awesome satisfactioning feeling of perfect peace and Harmony if they would try and hide in a cardboard box...

just kidding... hiding in closets would still be cool.
I discovered characters will only crouch once action begins. Be careful and stick people behind large objects when not in action.

Yea, I know...

You can always hide behind door entrances so that's something I try to use as much as possible. If there's a door between you and where you want to peek you're safe to open the door without being seen.

Always treat stairs as highly dangerous areas to sneak in as they give you the least information about potential enemies. I typically look for the best angle to survey important stairs when setting up spotter support units.

Another thing you can utilize is to get an agent with a heartbeat sensor. Another trick is if you're able to observe one side of a stair to just hang out for a couple of turns to see if any guards above/below you are patrolling. Of course this still won't warn you about stationary guards. If you have to take a gamble going up or down a stair try to do everything else you can on the map first if possible so you don't engage combat too early in case you're spotted.
Keep track of when you're tresspassing and what the enemy vision cones are. The field of vision is not very big and I have followed right behind the backs of several guards to sneak past them by just observing their patrol routes by mousing over them. (Enemy soldiers are quite dumb.)
Cool, cheers for these replies all.

I think my brain has been hardwired with Invisible Inc vision rules, which aren't working for me. Given that the guards' vision works on a block by block basis, it's annoying me that the travel routes are so organic.

I've also realised you have to keep camera tracked blocks in view to avoid another agent walking over them. it's not enough that you've spotted them once.

But yes doorways are my friend. Again, unlike invisible inc you can open and close doors without raising suspicion.
