I had heard of this game a long time ago. It was listed in a very old Top Horror Games list somewhere, and it always peaked my interest way back when. Kind of gives me a 7th Guest vibe.
I'm sure these days it's just cheesy as hell, but it still looked interesting. I heard the thing came on 6 CD's or something. Anyone play it?
Yeah, especially the atmosphere is pretty awesome. And don't forget about the gruesome (splatter-)sequences. Only the puzzle are a bit too easy for my taste. Anyway, just bought it and I'm quite happy to play this masterpiece finally on Win 7.
I hope, GOG will release Phantasmagoria 2 as well x)
Edit: it came out on seven discs ;-)

It got mediocre reviews as far as the game elements, but high marks for technology when it came out being the largest game of its time (7 CDs) with the most interactive movie elements. The video sequences are somewhat cheesy and not of the same caliber as the Wing Commander games or The Best Within (another Sierra title) - however it did push the envelope on violence and dark themes as it is a true 'horror' game - only to be topped by the sequel which had more violence/sex and much higher quality video sequences.
If you know going into the game to take everything with a grain of salt (I'd personally try finding it on Ebay unless GOG drops the price to $5.99) then you will be all right - if you go in expecting the quality of Gabriel Knight SOTF or another beloved adventure title you will probably be disappointed.

Agreed, I'd hope they also release Phan 2 to complete the series.

I loved this game, played it multiple times to get all the different choices, but squeemish so had to play on censor mode lol. I didn't think there would be a change of GK2 since that was 5 CD's but I have hope now that we have a 7 CD game on here! :-)
This game came out during an awkward time in PC gaming where CDROM technology had only recently found its way into most homes, and after the perceived "golden age of adventure games" had recently passed. Reviews were unkind to this game, but having replayed it recently I think it's an exceptionally good game.
Very good characters, spooky settings, an interesting history to learn about, and relatively easy puzzles mean you will progress steadily through this game and will enjoy the atmosphere very much. It's an added blessing that you don't have to switch CDs in the GOG version as well since this beast came on 7 discs!
The most special thing about this game is that it is written by Roberta Williams, late in her career. She has written more adventure games than anyone else in the history of video games, and this is by far the darkest and most suspenseful game she has written, so there is a lot of love and care in her meticulous fiction. There is a ton of depth for those who care to look at everything, and multiple endings if you care to try things differently your second and third times around.
Just a warning - this is without a doubt the GORIEST game I have ever played. I've seen other games that are bloodier, but the fact that this game is primarily shot on film makes the horror aspect so much more impactful than pure 3D/CGI games. If you like this sort of thing you will be delighted by the horror aspects here, but if you're squeamish you should play it on censored mode which just skips past the worst scenes.
I own the original CDROM version but I bought this game IMMEDIATELY when I saw it on GOG. Whether or not you've played this game before, it's really worth your while to do so now. It's such a unique experience that no one else has matched (except for the equally incredible Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within, also by Sierra).
Word can't accurately express how surprised I was to see this on the front page this morning. Phantasmagoria, to me, is one of the most nostalgic games from my childhood. Not that I was some deranged 6 year old boy loving to play, but I just have these vague memories of my oldest brother getting this game (in the Stage Fright pack with Puzzle of the Flesh), and watching him play it. It was pretty shocking how far it went, and stuck with me, just on imagery alone, down through the years. Now, about 15 years later, I feel like I have to get it, and revisit it on my own.
Literally my favorite point and click adventure ever. I'm VERY happy this is on here.
Well I'm sold. I'm trying to hold on to my money, and I got some Rock Band 2 DLC to buy today, but as soon as I fall into an extra 10 bucks, I'll be getting this game f'sho
Get this game ASAP, you won't regret it, unless you are squeamish...
BTW Stone, do you play Rock Band 2 on the PS3?
I remember that playing Phantasmagoria 2 was sort of intuitive (a true exception is the control panel in the end of game) but nightmarish about Phantasmagoria 1 was that you don't see any active icon and it was hard to determine what to do or if there is an active object.
Did GOG manage to make some adjustments like in the case of Gabriel Knight 1, for example?
By the way, it was amusing to find Phantasmagoria 2 out in some out-of the way shop during game fair many years ago :). Those days it was already unobtainable thanks to its release date.
I'm hoping that one day, The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour will get released on here as well, I remember playing them when they were around, but I'm fairly certain that I never finished either one of them. If my memory serves me correctly, I found them both entertaining though, so I hope they show up here at some point as well as Phantasmagoria 2, which I never got the chance to play at all.
Heard great things about this game, but the screen shots look kinda "pixel-y". Are the graphics clear? Same questions goes for Saniterium & Phantasmagoria. (I already forgot which forum I was posting at)
Thanks for any responses.

When I play Phantasmagoria 1, the cursor changes color when it is over an object. Hmm...

I made it look like this with DOSbox options.
