Has this been updated to install on modern systems or does it require dosbox to play?

The GOG version uses DOSBox.
That said, the setup procedure is as simple as it gets on a modern system too, and the game then runs via DOSBox that's included in the installation.

As I remember, the original game also ran via a Windows 95 install routine - but probably runs much cleaner through DOSBOX...
