My game keeps crashing every 5 minutes no matter what I do. Using Windows 8.1 Pro. Any fix?

I hit frequent crashes in Win7-64. Whenever the game tried loading a video, the game would crash and I would get a "failed to initialize" message box.
I gave up and am running a WinXP VM through VirtualBox - and the game plays just fine in the VM.
