What was the solution?
(I'm considering purchasing Patrician 1+2)

Do you have to enter them from the manual or has the game been altered to bypass the old copy protection if you give a wrong answer?

Bypassed, you can just enter whatever when asked to identify the image shown. Here is the map the game is talking about.
