The manual claims there is a pause button, but instead of "P" or "]" the binding is listed only as "PAUSE." I don't know about you, but my keyboard doesn't have a PAUSE button, heh. I tried systematically pressing every button on my keyboard, but none of them paused the game. This would really increase my enjoyment, because I wouldn't have to tap the speed down to the lowest setting when I want to issue multiple orders in a town.

Also, I see you can use the fast forward toolbar button, and the game will auto-pause when something significant happens (like a ship or convoy reaching port). That's nice, but as the game progresses I like to play on fast or very fast most of the time, and never use the fast forward. Is there a way to make the game auto-pause every time a ship reaches port even though you're not using fast forward? That would be excellent.

Thanks.

It should be on the right of the topmost row of keys. Right over PgUp. Which language is your keyboard? Is it integrated in an laptop oder plugged-in?

<PAUSE/BREAK> on mine.
I'm using a standard U.S. English QWERTY desktop keyboard.

I was starting to wonder whether or not there even was a pause button, but you guys seem to have one, so I'll keep searching.

So far, I find this game to be about 5/8 brilliant to 3/8 frustrating.

Hmm, which specific keyboard? Maybe it doesn't have one.

This is exactly how hotseat mode works, you can use it alone as well. One turn starts when a ship reaches port, when you're done trading, building, looking around you press some key and it fast forwards until the next ship arrives somewhere.

To try hotseat, go into your saves folder, P3/save/Ein should hold your current saves. Make a new folder P3/save/Mehr and copy some save files there, remember to grab both files, .pat and .pst. Now select multiplayer, hotseat and you should be able to load those saves. (I hope the folder structures didn't change between P2Gold and P3, gameplay is completely identical so its worth a shot, apologies in advance if its not, don't have P3)

Also P3 doesn't have a real pause, even what the Break/Pause key does slowly keeps advancing time, if you need to leave for an hour hit ESC, while on the menu the game really pauses, this is the only way in single player.

If you're still looking for the key... find print screen, it should be the leftmost of a group of three, the middle is scroll lock aaaaand on the right is break/pause which you're looking for.

Yes, as far as I can tell this is the correct answer. The only time the game actually pauses fully is for things like naming newly launched ships.

What I discovered is that the F16 on my keyboard is the "pause" button. It's in the upper left corner of the block containing the numeric keypad, right above the CLEAR key. Pressing it flips back and forth between the slowest game speed, and whatever speed was set before you pushed it. This means it does nothing if you've already manually set the game to run at the slowest speed, which is why I missed it before.

It's amusing to note that the manual specifically says you can issue commands while the game is paused.

Still, finding this button made the game much easier to play. Good.

Thank you.

Thanks for this, I've spent the last few hours searching the net for the answer to the pause key. I have Pause/Break on my keyboard but as you said it just keeps toggling between the lowest speeds, as you I had set mine to the slowest. Ironically I only just bought the game off GOG yesterday, I should have checked here first.
+1 to GOG :)

No problem! I always try to fully explain and post whatever solutions I find because you never know when someone else might have the same problem, even a year or two later.

It's a good game, BTW.
