Anyone know if I need to play the first Pathologic to understand this game?

I'm debating whether to buy or not.

No necessity in playing first game first.
References to first game are rather sublime and skipping/not understanding them do have its benefits.
Can't tell more without spoiling it all, apologies!

They're trying ti bring you up to speed in the intro. And since it's re-imagination you will be presented with same information as classic pathologic players. But this one is easier to understand and it jumps to the hot stuff much sooner.

I'm still exploring and losing horribly, but from my initial impressions I get the idea that IPL wanted the world and ideas and concepts of Pathologic to be more accessable to new audiences, so I think you're good
