After you actual get the kingdom on auto, things get really weird.
Quests update and fail at random (those for kingdom management), much background information is also missing about quests.

I was really confused with the ancient curse quest.
Going there, doing this, running forth and back to the temple and that hill. Nothing triggered and you do not know what is going on. Then eventually you do find spiders on the hill, kill them and then the quest fails after it runs out anyway.
This is because you cannot assign any advisers.
You can go and talk to Bokken but not build the laboratory for him.
You cannot claim the land, you cannot cannot cannot...
I guess it would have continued like this.

On non-auto and my second start of the game.
I finished the curse quests like a no-brainer. You knew there are evil monsters on the hill and you had to set one of your advisers to deal with the spiders. The text on the cards make this very clear.
Bang quest solved.
Lots of other things I already triggered.

There is no real tutorial for this.
I just remember:
Events -> assign or talk to advisers and/or go there yourself
Projects -> assign adviser, costs money (BP) and forwards the time when started (be careful!)
Other -> not sure yet

ive run into this too I detest the kingdom crapIt ruins POE for me it ruined Fallout 4 for me and it doesn't even work in this game everything else about the game is goodExcept the lack of a manal
my vote is to not auto. for several reasons.
1st: I am not sure how masters and expansion are handled by AI
2nd: you will have too much downtime to kill. bright side is that if you spend all that time on the road you might even grind up to 20. might also drive you insane in the process.
3rd linked to 2nd. there is no good way to skip large amounts of time on auto afaik.

there is a decent guide on management portion. I will make my own too when kingdom changes will be more or less finalized by devs.
