I’m new to this game and am going to build either a Fighter 19, Monk 1 (or something like that) or a Duelist…and right now the latter sounds kinda fun. I realize that Sword Saint seems to be the most popular way to go for a Duelilst and maybe even the most effective. But personally, my preference is a non-magic-based character. Another preference is going with only 7 levels of Duelist. So, if I understand correctly and want DEX bonus to damage, I have these options…

1a. Aldori Defender 10, Rogue/Thug 3, Duelist 7
1b. Aldori Defender 9, Monk 1, Rogue/Thug 3, Duelist 7
2a. Aldori Defender 12, Aldori Swordlord 1, Duelist 7
2b. Aldori Defender 11, Monk 1, Aldori Swordlord 1, Duelist 7

So these are my questions…..
1. Which is preferrable…grabbing the 1 level of Aldori Swordlord or the 3 levels of Rogue? I originally gravitated away from Swordlord because of the skill requirements. But then I wondered if these skills are ones I should be getting anyway?
2. Options 1b and 2b simply trade 1 level of Aldori Defender for 1 level of Monk. This would obviously imply going unarmored vs light-armored but also gives me two more feats and access to Crane Style/Wing. Thoughts on this?
3. This is my first time playing this game, so…Is there anything significant that I have overlooked?
4. If you feel like the build I have in mind sounds too inferior, would I be better off skipping the Duelist and going with my other alternative?

Any input is much appreciated!

I would assume you already made your decision but I would always go with what seems like the most fun to me. In other words for me what is most fun would be to get a character that is okay through the entire game and does not need to be carried 75% of the time before becoming great at the end.

Which one of these options seems like the most fun to you?

Actually, I have not yet decided....I' m very torn between these as they both sound extremely fun. I was hoping to use input from here to finalize my decision.

How do you decide what is fun?

I guess you could go by roleplaying. What do you dream roleplaying this character as? Would it be the Dread Pirate Roberts and his incredible duelist ability shown in the movie? Then the thief/rogue/monk option would be best match.

Do you imagine more of like from pirates of the caribbean? Then the monk swordlord/defender would be best due to the agility and sword fighting ability.

If you are thinking more like some thief ability like hiding and backstabbing or the just the extra damage then the rogue with no monk would be best. Imagine a character like that.

Finally probably the most dull character to me is the defender/swordlord/duelist. It is a straight combat person with less of the other ability offered by the rogue/monk.

Also, how much juggling of skills and abilities do you want to do. If a lot is your preference then the defender/monk/swordlord/duelist would be number one.

If you want to minimize the build complications then go with defender/swordlord/duelist.

Which of these classes outside of the defender and duelist calls to you the most?
Is it the Rogue
Is it the Monk
Is it the Swordlord
Of those 3 which makes your imagination run wild? Maybe take some inspiration from the characters in the new D&D movie.
Right now, two ideas appeal strongly to me....
1. A hefty dwarf fighter (I already kinda have this build figured out.)
2. A human or Asimar non-magical duelist. (This build is NOT yet clear in my mind.)
(Whether I take a dip of rogue or monk or whatever is simply a matter of what is most effective.)

To make my decision, I just want to get a clearer picture of my build for the latter, so that I can compare the two and pick,.
I guess my first two questions are what I'm wondering most.

1. I know I need my dex bonus to damage. So, to achieve this, is it better to grab 3-4 levels of rogue, or to meet all the skill requirements for the one level of Aldori Swordlord?

2. As a non-magic-wielding duelist, is it better to go unarmored or light armor?
