I'm new to this game and can't decide on what class I should pick for my first playthrough.

Normally in this type of game i like to play high charisma and persuasion character.

For combat I want to play a healer that can also be decent up close in melee as well as having some potent offensive spells (preferably holy or divine).

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated as after a quick look through the character creator I'm not sure what will suit my needs best.

I was looking at the Hospitaler and that looks good. But I was thinking more a Healer/DPS and not really built for tanking.

Then gather all the information you can about what you want and ask InEffect in his build for you thread.

Erastil Cleric Eccleisithurge with Community and Animal domains, built up to do archery works fine. Won't excel like a ranger at DPS, or a Sorcerer with the blasting. But you will have the option. The pet will add a fair amount of DPS as well.

No armor might seem scary, but unless you lower difficulty, there is no functional difference between no armor and some armor in this game. There is tank, or not tank.

Grab Point Blank, Precise, Rapid Shot and Boon Companion in that order, just to build the foundation for your function, and then feel free to invest feats in healing if you want, or further add to DPS.

Blasting is much like tanking: Either you spec as hard as possible, and surrender most other function, or everything worth burning spells on will resist your DC and you'll underperform

Melee is not a place you want to be with a cleric unless you're doing reach weapons, and you'll not do good DPS until mid-game
