Pre-ordered the max pack. $90 or some such thing. Cant get a grp to lvl 3. Oh sure, I could just keep playing them even though they died, but whats the point? When at 2nd level, the game throws a pair at werewolves at you, over and over and over again....it stops being a game. It stops being "fun". It becomes, a waste of time and money. DL'd on the 25th...gonna give you a week to fix it. I boot it up again next week wednesday and it does this again....all done.

Wait till you get level 4 and get a pair of elder rock elementals thrown at you in a random fight or at lvl 5 get poison wyverns or a pair of hydra's leering at you. Is just the straw that broke this camel's back..so to speak. (I was on the easiest difficulty in story mode too!) ugh
....Your experiences are not in line with mine on Challenging difficulty.

The hardest random encounter fights i found as a level 2/3 party was...well, the Technic League, wihch i think was -supposed- to be super hard.

So far, the hardest fight I've had in the game was a random encounter/ambush against 3 Primal Giant Spider Matriarchs who ambushed me from close range, so i didn't have time to buff anything on. Damn 50% miss chance.

And you are not supposed to fight the technic league at the first meeting. just give them a companion and get him/her back later. Then they are easy.

I never had any werewulfes at the beginning. There are only two areas, where you find werthings: the werrathill and one hill westward of it. The werrats were the hardest enemies in the whole region. And every region has such enemies. But you are not supposed to beat them so early. They are challenges, you can do, whenever you feel for it. And seriously? i felt better, when i fought, and won, because they were such an challenge. But i did them, when i knew, it was the right time. The times before i always lost, because i was not ready for it.

I am playing on normal and i never had werewulfes at the beginning. And i started two times and both times i did all at least the troll quest. So either, you play with an not-upgraded pack or you must have chosen some really hard difficulty.

You can find really hard enemies more westward, in the region of the nymph. There you have enemies, which you are supposed to fight at level 10 or so. Because this is an area, which you are supposed to do waaaay later.

I did not give them a companion, but also do not play "unfair" difficulty. On Normal or lower difficulty you can really just roleplay the character, there are a few enemies with Alchemistenfeuer who burn you to death or some with very strong bows, but everything can be beaten.
It took me ~45min to do the fight against the Hirschkoenig, hit and run, one enemy after the other. Once he was left alone, it was easy.

I will probably have to buy some fire protection from Bekkon to beat those fire throwing wolves in one cave. Everyone in 25m radius gets a 120 damage buffer against fire. They are expensive, though.

I'd recommend to play weaker enemies with no adjustments.

It's closer to pnp at that arrange, but still not quite the same.

For example, there is a mature wolf that has base attack +7, which is already stronger than tabletop dire wolf's +3.

custom mode...damage to party at 20%, crits against party off; easiest kindergarten walkthrough settings possible....you cant kill a werebeast with regular weapons and I have 1 +1 LSWD in the party. 2 werewolves...do the math

I dont meant to troll or be derogatory, I promise. But this game is not hard, it just requires thought and tactics.... which unfortunately is sort of old school now-a-days.
It's not that this game is hard, it's that new games are way, way too easy.

Though there are few challengng fights the one most poeple think is hard was:
Stag Lord - this combat was just a cakewalk comparing to some others. Just let out the owlbear and look him dispatch enemies. Also poisoned wine make Lord himself weak and vulnerable.

Plus, do not kill Jenny, then she will help you at the fight against the stag lord.
Plus, explore the fort around the edges and take out the peripheral enemies, before you get the main battle started with the Staglord.
How do you give poison wine? When I got in there through diplomacy, enemies recognize me as known and attack me directly.

%%%%This thread is pretty spoilery. Also this post, below: %%%%

Remember when you spoke to Jhod at that ford? There was a stash of wine to be found with a perception check. Then if you passed a - I think it was a - Nature lore check, you get a chance to do that deed. (also, in terms of good storytelling, if you had a good encounter with Staglord's flunky at the same location - can't remember name - then she mentioned Staglord's drinking problem)

There is no "not supposed"
I cut their heads clean off their shoulders, not losing one man.

SPOILER:

just attack the one with the name and he will disappear. The rest is a piece of cake.
