I'm thinking about a 2nd playthrough to try out some builds, but I'm a little worried because the last chapter or so just seems to slog on and kingdom mgmt isn't really any fun at that point.

For ppl that have done multiple playthroughs, is it still enjoyable? Does auto-mgmt of the kingdom help out?

Being optimal with your exploration/decision making is half the fun.
The house is even less of an issue if you know what to expect. If you hate it that much - just grab a trip kineticist with you and faceroll it(along with the rest of the game).
