Footnote: (Ive played the beta and I am basing this review/opinion on that )
I've been PC playing games since I was 3, I've seen a lot - but by no means it all. I own more games than I would ever count - and I've played probably only 5/8 of them. I also have a PS3, but I have a tendency to just buy PC games for the sake of it, whether to support indie devs and promote innovation or just on the odd chance I might want to play it one day (Steam sales are a bitch)
My discovery of this game was such a breath of fresh air for me, here is a game I can "invest" myself in and become the Player Character without laborious time investment in stats etc OR arbitrary definitions. The initially minimalistic gameplay opens up into a complex yet familiar system which will test both your vigilance and compassion - Im not going to say this game is a social commentary (even though it could be) all I am saying is that its fairly comprehensive in the issues it tries to address. In the game - I had a job to do, and dependants relying on me too - yet I was given the liberty to act in spite of the rules, and my choices had consequences.
I certainly felt myself become the player character - because it was so easy to relate to their situation (probably because the dev left a lot to our imagination)
I hope this game does well, not only for the sake of the developer but for the sake of PC gaming en-masse. This is the kind of game that could make those unfamiliar with the classics have a double take and discover a whole world of gaming greats.
For me though it's the kind of game that gives me hope in the future of PC gaming - I will be playing the shit out of this on the 8th, then exploring its modding potential.
Moral of the story:
Less can be, and often is more.
